Vallis is a fine looking man despite what he thinks. His skin is a dark brown, a stark contrast from the norm all throughout Fiore, and his eyes are a light brown. His curly, wiry hair is jet black, the same as his eyebrows and any other body hair. He has a round face with big ears; a short, wide nose; full lips; and a strong jawline. He also has a slightly lean physique from some amounts of exercise, but it is clear that he does not have the body of an athlete or fighter.
Like many mages, there’s no difference between Vallis’s casual and battle wear. He likes to wear short and long-sleeved t-shirts of various colors and designs paired with comfortable shorts or pants; his favorite colors to wear are black, green, orange and yellow. His footwear consists mostly of casual shoes. He wears a white or black do-rag with long tie strips that flow down his back along with a fancy pair of black sunglasses. If he’s not wearing them, he typically rests them on top of his head. Finally, he wears a orange and black patterned shemagh scarf around his neck; if need be, he can pull it up to cover his mouth and nose. Combined with his shades, he can hide his face from view.

Vallis is a thinker. He wonders all about the world around him and strives to learn more. His thirst for knowledge does not stop there; introspection is one of Vallis’s main talents. He is able to reflect upon his goals, actions, beliefs and disposition and make adjustments accordingly. He sees every day a new opportunity to learn something about the world, others or himself. Now, while he is up for learning, Vallis is quite the private person. He does not like giving out too much information about himself, and he has a habit of keeping secrets from others. This quirk is not born from malice; Vallis simply knows how brutal the magical world can be, and he’d rather not his demise come from someone using his own knowledge against him.
Despite others’ first impressions, Vallis is wise and self-aware. He knows his strengths, weaknesses, capabilities and limits. He’s brutally honest with himself and others; if something needs to be said, he’ll say it. However, he will say it in the most tactful way possible. Vallis’s wisdom surfaces when he or others need it, and it helps him make sensible, grounded decisions.
Vallis is naturally friendly and is polite with almost anyone. It could be a good friend, a random stranger or a bloodthirsty enemy; it doesn’t matter. Vallis realizes that people can take advantage of his kindness, but that doesn’t make him change his attitude. To him, his attitude allows him to connect with many different people from all kinds of backgrounds. The world is already deadly, ruthlessly cutthroat, rife with conflict and filled with plenty of unsavory individuals. The least Vallis can do is ensure that he isn’t adding onto the problem. Even with his initial politeness, he is often skeptical of others and their true characters. Deceit and facades are all too common, and he relies on his instincts on whether others can be trusted or not. Still, he can be wrong about others and is more than willing to admit his fault if someone proves themselves to him.
Now, Vallis is not afraid to admit that he scares easily. He is fearful of the magical world as much as he intrigued by it. It is not hard to intimidate or frighten him, and he is not the bravest person out there. He is also not a fan of taking risks and would rather take the safe option no matter what. Of course, if push comes to shove, he will take risks with his decision-making, but he does not like it whatsoever. Even so, Vallis can become brave if he truly puts his mind to it and can be pushed to take risks with the right amount of encouragement … or danger.
HISTORY
Vallis is a late bloomer.
Vallis was not always a mage or capable of magic even though he was born to two skilled mages. In fact, Vallis did not express much interest in becoming a mage himself at all in his early years. He was far more concerned with playing with his friends, learning in school, watching cartoons, playing video games and stuffing his face with sweets. Although his parents were disappointed about Vallis’s disinterest in magic, they loved their son nonetheless. Perhaps it was better for him not to be exposed to the magical world. After all, many of the world’s catastrophes were born from magic.
However, as Vallis grew older and his friends went off to become mages and adventurers of their own, Vallis remained behind. He had a great education, and he was making good money at the lacrima manufacturing business he was working at.
Eventually, Vallis yearned to expand his horizons, and he believed magic was the key for him to do just that.
Nothing could have prepared him for the learning process. No matter what Vallis did, he was simply incapable of mustering any sort of magical power. Unwilling to accept defeat, Vallis researched as much as he can about any potential ways to awaken one’s latent magical power. Then, he heard a rumor about a massive concentration of magic power centered within Mikage Forest. Vallis read that being around large amounts of magic power was enough to spur one’s magic to life, making those incapable of magic able to use it. It was an extremely dangerous endeavour, and Vallis would normally never take such incredible risks.
However, in this instance, this was the best chance he had to finally become a mage.
Vallis made the voyage to Mikage Forest, and his findings were nothing short of extraordinary. The air was thick with magic, so much that the magical energy manifested into visible, dark green strands. Eventually, Vallis arrived at one of the forest’s lakes. Ever since Vallis had entered the forest, he did not see any other person. However, several feet ahead, a figure sat crosslegged by the lake’s shore. Vallis squinted as he tried to make out who or what the figure was. It looked humanoid, save for the two large horns jutting straight out of the figure’s skull. Then, it hit him.
“... The magic. It’s coming from them,” Vallis muttered. Even with the distance between them, the figure’s magical power bore down on Vallis like a two ton weight. Sweat bridled on Vallis’s brow. His muscles tensed. He took a step back and another. Then, the figure called out to him.
“What brings you here?”
The figure’s deep, gruff voice echoed throughout the clearing. Vallis bit his lip before answering.
“I’m here to find out where the magic power in the forest was coming from. Does it belong to you?”
The figure remained still. “That it does. A byproduct of my power. Is it power you seek?”
Vallis paused. “... No, not necessarily. I just want to learn magic. I’ve done what I can to learn, but I can’t do it. I figured that being around this magic would help me and--”
His voice trailed off. Suddenly, the figure laughed, his deep voice rattling Vallis’s core. “Leave now, and forget ever becoming a mage. You aren’t worthy of any magical power, mortal.”
Vallis took a step back, shocked by the figure’s response. He looked down towards the ground and did not move.
“I said leave, mortal,” the figure commanded. Dark green tendrils of pure mana shot forth from the figure’s magical aura and crashed right to Vallis. Vallis screamed as the figure’s magical power overwhelmed him, filling his mind and soul with absolute dread. Vallis crumbled down to the ground, struggling to resist the figure’s influence. His body and mind told him to flee, but his spirit said otherwise. With painstaking effort, Vallis forced himself to his knees and eyed the figure with an agony-twisted visage.
“Please. Help me. Please,” Vallis pleaded. “I want to use magic … to change the world for the better. Please …”
The figure kept his back turned. Then, the volatile magic surrounding him dissipated, releasing Vallis for its clutches. With a chuckle, the figure finally stood up to his full height. He easily stood well above eight feet tall with a muscular physique decorated with long spines that matched his black and red skin. All he wore were a pair of tattered pants and a simple bamboo hat that hid his face from view. He walked over towards Vallis and peered down at him with a pair of glowing, orange eyes.
“Tell me your name, mortal,” he said.
Vallis looked up. “... Vallis.”
The figure knelt down. “I am Eitur, the Poison Devil. Your resolve is impressive, Vallis. Let us truly see if you mean what you say.” Eitur’s clawed hand began to cackle with noxious power, and he hovered it over Vallis’s head. “I will bestow upon you my unique brand of magic. It is not a power to take lightly. Fail to control it, and it will consume you, leaving you nothing more than a ravenous monster. However, if you succeed …” Eitur grinned, sharp teeth glinting. “We’ll see if that happens.”
Finally, Eitur rested his hand on Vallis’s head. Vallis felt a sudden onrush of magic flood his body, filling him with unimaginable power. The power overloaded his senses and body, and within a few moments, Vallis flopped onto the ground, unconscious. Eitur pulled his hand back and rose to his feet once more. “Curious mortal you are,” he murmured under his breath. “Don’t fail me.” After leaving Vallis a simple staff, Eitur disappeared into the forest, leaving Vallis unconscious on the forest floor.
Vallis was now a Poison Devil Slayer, and he would be forced to master his magic or be overtaken by it.
