“Oh. Well, I can’t really see your eyes from up here.” In another exaggerated gesture, Shinzu held his hand up horizontally over his forehead. For a moment, it looked as if he was saluting. However, all he was really doing was imitating the front bill of the Rune Knight’s hat. “Besides. They are just red. What’s there to make fun of?” He asked sincerely, as a foreign voice spewed a dark thought. “If they were grey eyes, I’d have to kill her.” He thought, while shrugging the words from his mind by shaking his head back and forth. It was getting increasingly difficult to differentiate his own thoughts from thoughts that did not originate from his own mind as of late.
“I don’t yell. I politely ask – with an enthusiastic tone. I know you Rune Knights are real killjoys, but surely it isn’t a crime to be happy.” Fighting, was about the only thing that did make Shinzu feel a modicum of joy. On top of that, the heat of battle was about the only time he could force the other voices in his head to quieten down. It was to him; what yoga is to a normal man. A normal man not forced to bear a dark curse. “Secondly, I haven’t damaged anything in months. What little, superficial damage I do cause, whether a result of my own actions or another’s, I pay for out of my own pocket as penance.” Shinzu grinned at the end of his grand speech. He had come a long way from never being able to express himself, to being able to carefully navigate out of a Rune Knight’s minefield of entrapping questions.
“Thirdly. I’m highly efficient.” Shinzu took a second to jab his thumb into his chest, before shoving the hand back into his pocket. The action revealed that he was agitated, despite what his playful grin showed. “So, Miss Rune Knight – what about you. How do you have time to fight crime and protect the innocent people of Crocus, when you’re spending all your time harassing Sabertooth members? I’m guessing I’m not the first you’ve targeted. Are you just simply efficient too?” Shinzu felt an urge to spit on the ground, but carefully resisted the action. Littering was an offence after all, and he could practically sense this woman’s intense desire to arrest him.
“Well, you seem to be patrolling a so-called safe post. Does that make you a low-ranking Rune Knight?” Shinzu asked with an exaggerated raised eyebrow, while gesturing at the surroundings to draw attention to the lack of dangers in the immediate area. Fighting this woman with his fists would be impossible. Not when the smallest of accusations could land him jail time and the full wrath of the Rune Knight collective. All he could really do in this situation was use his words to fight. “Hold on. See that.” Shinzu pulled his right hand out from his pocket to point out a civilian asking for directions from an elderly couple. They were only ten meters away, but it was still impressive that Shinzu’s keen sense of hearing had managed to capture their conversation despite appearing focused on the Rune Knight's words. “If going around asking people a simple question is illegal, then you should arrest him too. Do you actually have any proof I’ve broken anything? Because I have been super special careful since the last warning your organisation sent to Sabertooth. It also isn’t assault if two consenting adults spar. If it was, martial arts would never have become a thing. Is that all, or do you have any more surprise accusations up your tiny sleeves?”
Shinzu sighed at the fact that he was even bothering to justify himself to this Rune Knight. Normally, he knew to just accept their verbal abuse and walk away. However, for some reason, he couldn’t help but stand his ground today. Perhaps it was the fact that he hadn’t fought anyone in an entire week, which left him craving for even something as mundane as a verbal argument. Perhaps even, it was the strange scent emanating off the woman. A strange, yet familiar scent that he couldn’t quite place. “Kill her.” Thought an unknown voice in Shinzu’s mind, which startled him into an abruptly stiff posture. “You’re right. We are the epitome of arrogance.” Shinzu nodded along playfully, while hiding the fact that his heartbeat was racing. He was used to dark, murderous voices speaking in his mind. However, none thus far had been as tempting to listen to as that one. “It’s just a shame arrogance isn’t a crime. Besides, that’s rich coming from a Runey. You guys are practically arrogance incarnate...” He said, with no real enthusiasm or malice in his words. “I need to leave… Quickly. I am losing control...” He thought to himself while eyeing the sky. “The sun…” He told himself as he began staring intently at the sun, unblinking. The searing pain in his steadily reddening eyeballs seemed to be helping him stay in control.

Clink. Clink. Clink. The sound of metal smacking against even soft ground was more than enough to irritate Shinzu’s heightened senses. Clink. Clink. The sound seemed to grate against his sanity as it grew louder and closer with every moment. It was as if it was hunting him. Clink. “Huh?” Opening his eyes, Shinzu’s cobalt blue iris met with a pair of crimson staring right back at him. Rolling his upper body backwards, he paused for a moment to take in the woman’s words before abruptly jolting forwards to launch himself off the bench and onto his feet.
“Ashtooth? Two groups know me by that name. One would be Sabertooth…” Shinzu trailed off while studying the figure ten meters away from him. “…But you don’t exactly meet the height restriction. I guess that makes you a Rune Knight?” Shinzu had met another Rune Knight recently named Topaz. She had succeeded in showing him that not all Rune Knights were stern and a menace to those just trying to enjoy life and battle their literal inner demons. However, upon taking in this knight's opening line, Shinzu couldn’t help but conclude that he definitely hadn’t just been discovered by one of the rare few ‘good ones’.
“Besides, don’t you have anything better to do than randomly harass a guy resting on a bench?” Grinning, Shinzu took a few steps forwards, until the gap between him and the woman closed to a mere five meters to highlight the height difference. “No crimes to solve? People to protect? Is Crocus so in peace that I’ve jumped up your priority list over night and become public enemy number one?” Shinzu slotted his hands into his pockets with a rough shove. Despite attempting to look relaxed, he really wasn’t. However, no matter what he said or did, as long as he didn’t break any rules, the Rune Knight wouldn’t be able to arrest him.
“I’ve caused enough trouble for the guild in the past. I won’t be tainting Sabertooth’s name any further today.” Feigning a clearly fake smile, Shinzu unclenched his hidden fists and rolled back his shoulders to straighten his posture. “That aside – what’s up? I know how much you Rune Knight’s hate idle banter. Did I break some unwritten rule again? Was there a wet paint sign on the bench I didn’t spot?” In a rather exaggerated and mocking manner, Shinzu twisted his upper body around to glance at his back in a attempt at finding the so called non-existent fresh paint on his clothing.

Streaks of orange blazed across the sky, courtesy of the setting sun giving way to the fast-approaching evening. In some of the smaller towns, this would be when some of the shops and restaurants would usually begin to close. A signal for the civilians to disperse and return to their private homes. However, this simple fact could never be true for a city, let alone a capital. Especially not Crocus. “Fine.” Grunted Shinzu as he trundled away from a group of individuals in a rather exaggerated and purposeful manner, as if half-expecting them to stop him.
“Cowards!” He yelled, once it became clear that his slow and gradual retreat would not be stopped by the prior group. Another failed attempt at initiating a spar. Sighing, Shinzu gave the grassy area a quick glance. A disappointed expression then possessed him not more than a few moments later. Skinny civilians. Children queuing up for ice-cream. Musicians filling the vibrant park air with joyful melodies. There seemed to be no one suitable to spar with today. The closest, were the hooligans from earlier, that had simply rejected his request.
All life seemingly leaving him, Shinzu began to slouch as his shoulders slumped heavily. He seemed drained and pale, despite not actually having achieved anything meaningful all day. “Another boring day…” He muttered to himself as he forced himself towards a park bench, with his feet dragging along the ground with each step. By the time he reached the bench, he simply threw himself at it with little regard for his own body. As much as he had made himself feel like nothing more than a sack of potatoes at that moment, it was nice no longer having his body weight bearing down on his sore feet.

Custom Mods:
The below are newly created Mods to be used with some of my existing spells.
Ashen Affliction – Ash Devil particles are known to linger and irritate. Anyone entering an area while or after the technique has been performed will be left blinded if not wearing any equipment to protect their eyes, and will also be in a state of violent coughing if breathing in the particles without protection over their mouth and nose. Leaving a zone with lingering ash particles or cleansing the air will cause the debuffs to end after the next full round.
Ashen Conversion – Must be paired with Reflect. Creatures are often immune or resistant to their own element. When reflecting a spell back at the opponent, the spell will deal slashing damage courtesy of the Ash Devil particles, rather than the element or physical typing of the original reflected spell.
Spells:
The below are spells modified in accordance with the 13/06/2020 Site Changes. Changes/added Mods have been highlighted in blue.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Clamour TYPE: Offensive RANK: B MODS: Ashen Affliction, Damage over Time, Area of Effect, Slashing DESCRIPTION: The user places his hands close together, palms facing each other, to create a magic circle between the empty space of his hands. In a clapping gesture, he then slams his palms together to cause a vortex of coarse ash to explode out from his body in a sphere-shaped spiralling fashion to lacerate everything around him for C-Rank damage. Ash Devil particles are known to linger and irritate. Anyone entering an area while or after Ash Devil’s Clamour has been performed will be left blinded and coughing violently until the next full Round if not wearing any equipment to protect their eyes, mouth or nose, and they will suffer an additional C-Rank damage each round from the coarse ash spiralling around in the air. After three rounds, the ash will dissipate naturally and simply linger harmlessly along the air, effectively ending the technique and preventing it from reapplying any debuffs.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Bellow TYPE: Offensive RANK: B MODS: Overcharge (Slashing) DESCRIPTION: The user takes in a deep breath, while allowing a magic circle to form in front of his mouth. Abruptly and sharply, he then exhales into the magic circle, to fire a thin twister of coarse ash at a single target. Due to the sheer force of the exhale, the target caught by the twister will be left utterly lacerated for A-Rank damage. However, unlike with other Ash Devil Slayer techniques, the great force behind this technique will cause the ash particles involved in the technique to dissipate near instantly, preventing them from lingering harmlessly in the air.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Woe TYPE: Defensive RANK: B MODS: Reflect, Area of Effect (Ranged), Ashen Conversion DESCRIPTION: The user targets an area rich with lingering ash particles, either around themselves, or an area in the distance to cause a magic circle to light up momentarily. If a spell enters the designated area and clashes with the magic circle, the circle will suddenly light up to block the spell. Ash particles will then suddenly begin spewing from the circle before swallowing the opposing spell to fire it back at the caster in the form of a spiralling twister of ash to deal slashing damage regardless of whatever element the reflected spell originally consisted of. As this spell can be used at range, it can even reflect spells not aimed at the user. However, this spell requires the use of existing ash particles, and so can only be cast in designated zones where a spell has already been used that has enriched the air with lingering ash. This will effectively remove all the lingering ash from one area, and instead enrich the reflected spell's targeted zone with harmless lingering ash.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Ascent TYPE: Defensive RANK: B MODS: Barrier, Flight, Teleport DESCRIPTION: The user conjures a magic circle around his back, which immediately sprouts two grey ashen wings. By default, the wings will appear feathery and rather mundane. However, the closer the user is to madness and corruption, the more demonic of an appearance the wings will take. The ashen wings can be used to achieve flight for 3 Rounds, or even to achieve a short-ranged instantaneous burst of speed to evade well-telegraphed attacks once per Round. The wings can also drape over the user to block C-Rank worth of damage. However, as the wings are mirror duplicates of each other, destroying one wing will automatically cause the other to also dissipate into a harmless cloud of lingering ash.

“Here?” Shinzu glanced around the vast empty area cautiously. No people – that was good. However, he felt cautious due to all the soft and fragile blades of grass cushioning his feet. Would he get in trouble for damaging the grass? Unsure, he made a mental note to only go for high-angled attacks to avoid leaving behind any damage or debris along the floor. Even with a Rune Knight’s blessings, he didn’t want to risk leaving behind any evidence that could be used to hurt either his or Sabertooth’s reputation. A large chunk of teen years spent causing unintended trouble for others had taught him that much.
“Huh, she’s giving up?” Shinzu blinked as Topaz thrust her hands high into the air as if surrendering. “Danger.” Said the usually unhelpful voice, in an unusually helpful manner. “W-Wind!?” Uncharacteristically, Shinzu was forced into an abrupt defensive as dark winds twisted around Topaz before spitting out two tentacle-like structures. Gritting his teeth, the Slayer kicked off the ground to leap away from the first, before crashing onto the ground harshly and continuing the movement with a slight roll towards the right to narrowly dodge the next. “Unfair!” He called out while slamming a foot onto the ground to regain his footing, albeit in a low kneeling posture. With his shoulder now aching from the less than elegant dodge, Shinzu knew he couldn’t waste time getting up fully. Not when he couldn’t know for sure if Topaz could simply redirect her constructs to continue attacking.
Taking the small window after the dodge to act, he took in a swift mouthful of air to top off his lungs to the brim, before exhaling sharply into a magic circle that suddenly formed directly in front of his mouth. “Ash Devil’s Bellow!” As his dark breath hit the circle, a twister of destructive dark grey ash suddenly shot out the other side and spiralled towards Topaz’s location. Wind was an Ash Slayer’s greatest weakness. Regardless of magic power, Topaz had the elemental advantage here. As harsh as it was going all out against her, Shinzu needed to know how well his strongest ash spell would hold up against Topaz’s strange dark-tinted wind magic.

“Hey now – I’m not that big.” Shinzu retorted as he stepped into his swing to transfer his full body weight into the hefty blow. Less swordsmanship now and more baseball, the satisfying sound of metal on metal clamoured against the air once more as Glacio blocked the strike, only to be knocked off balance and forced to retreat. The sound of snickering would then get further away as Shinzu made a decision to stand his ground, rather than chasing after Glacio. The ear-to-ear grin clearly revealed that the Slayer was enjoying himself. Rushing in and going all out from the start would only be counterproductive. He wanted to enjoy and savour this for as long as possible. Even if that gave Glacio a precious few moments to recover and strategize, Shinzu would gladly give up his opportunity to strike a winning blow if it meant prolonging this joyous spar.
“Strike you down? You should be the one trying to strike me down!” Grin ever-widening, Shinzu twisted the katana in his two-handed grip so that rather awkwardly, the curve of the steel now pulled away from Glacio. With the flat end of the blade now facing forwards, Glacio would only be dealt blunt-force trauma if the blade did make contact with him. “However – Ask, and you will receive.” Kicking off the ground, Shinzu felt a jolt of adrenaline flood his system as he broke out into a mad dash. By the time the gap would be closed, Glacio would already have comfortably pulled himself onto his feet, leaving him more than able to react to Shinzu’s next move. Assuming his eyes were sharp enough to follow the erratic and wild movements.
Taking in a deep breath to reinforce his core with air, Shinzu suddenly swung his blade upwards while slamming his dominant right foot forwards to transfer his body weight into the blow. Whether Glacio dodged or blocked, Shinzu planned on quickly pivoting his body towards the left to release a small slashing gesture at Glacio to cover his movements, before pivoting his body towards the right to commit to a wider and much more powerful arcing slash at the foe’s core. The Slayer seemed committed to a full on offensive, regardless of whether that left him open to a counterattack or not. However, despite acting like a reckless beast, a confident glimmer in Shinzu’s eyes would almost betray the fact that there seemed to be thought and logic put into his blurred combo.

Steadily catching his breath, Shinzu paused for a moment to allow his racing heartbeat to calm itself before reaching for a splintered doorknob. Standing in front of him, was the Rusty Bear – a rather dingy-looking alehouse with rectangular cut out along the front wall that people could sit behind while drinking to get some fresh air. It was a quaint design, perfect for social drinkers. However, having peered through the rectangular cut out upon approaching, Shinzu was able to note that the tavern was rather empty, with only two customers inside and a single barman acting as staff for the entire establishment.
Pushing gently, the door opened rather easily, albeit awkwardly due to not requiring the expected twisting of the knob. “Broken.” He noted, while entering. Almost instantly, a thick smog of alcohol smacked into his senses. Even without Slayer senses, not even Shinzu could hold back the obligatory flaring of his nostrils in disapprovement of the smells that he was now capturing. “It’s even darker in here than it is outside.” He thought, while approaching the bar. He kept a seat gap between himself and the individual towards his left. The only other person in the room was a bearded fellow that sat all the way on a table in the far corner. Skinny and brandishing a curved beer belly, there was no way that he could be the target of the mission.
As for the fellow on the left, Shinzu observed through the corner of his vision while ordering a whisky. The man possessed no beard but did have a long-pointed moustache. That seemed to fit the target’s vague description. He couldn’t tell for sure, but the man certainly was larger and burlier than the other. Perhaps there was muscle underneath the folds of his clothing. Perhaps not. Either way, this was as good as place as any to begin the preliminary investigations. Even if either man wasn’t the target, perhaps he could coax either into revealing any rumours they knew. “Is this even worth my time?” Suggested a voice, that no longer held any power over the determined Shinzu.

The world around Shinzu seemed to blur at that moment as he raced along a winding street that lead towards the darker and shadier parts of the town. It was towards this location, that his keen sense of hearing caught the faint sound of musical instruments and booing in the air. He realised in those precious few moments of running at top speed that it made sense now. How could his target – the infamous late-night brawler – have caused so much damage to the town and worked up such a reputation, without anyone having caught him yet? The answer had been starring Shinzu in the face all along.
Skidding to a halt, the act of which spraying his trousers in water from the puddles of collected rainwater along his path, Shinzu eyed the surroundings while panting. All this running had exhausted him and depleted his stamina. “How very human of me.” He thought to himself with a smile that parted slightly to allow his lungs to beg for precious oxygen. The more luxurious and well-established bars were padded with security and too densely populated with onlookers. There was no way someone could start a brawl inside one of them and then simply walk away a free man. In contrast, the seediest of the bars in the town were desolate and quiet. Spectators were at a minimum, and most probably wouldn’t want to speak to law enforcement even if they did fall prey to the infamous late-night brawler. Not when risking Rune Knights potentially unearthing even graver secrets about their shady lifestyles.
It all begun to make sense in Shinzu’s head. He had wasted time visiting the bar earlier. He needed to visit the dingiest and rundown bar he could find in the more remote parts of the town. To do that, all he needed to do was to follow the music and booing. While famous and talented singers often frequented the more well-established bars, the cheaper variety that lacked a frequent customer base probably couldn’t afford much more than utter novices and singers in training. Follow the booing, and eventually, he’d find what he was looking for. That was something he was willing to bet on.

Perhaps he really did only belong with his demon kin. Rubbing the side of his head, Shinzu grimaced as a tinge of pain flared up once more. This was likely going to bruise. A mark, that would only serve to invalidate anything he had to say in his defence tomorrow morning. Would his guild take his side as always, or would this be the last straw? “I am a burden.” Thought a voice. Gritting his teeth, Shinzu wondered how the rumours would spin the events that had just occurred. It was a frightening thought. Weeks of his best behaviour undone by a mere misunderstanding. That’s how fragile human society and reputation was.
Slowly pushing himself off the bench, he felt another sharp and random pain digging into his palm. Now standing upright, he brought his palm closer to his face, only to find a splinter lodged inside his skin. Pinching onto the end of the splinter carefully with a thumb and index finger, he pried the shard of wood free with relative ease. He was grateful the splinter was a relatively thick one, or else he may have needed to dig around it with a needle to force it out. “Red…” He muttered, as he watched a bead of blood slowly forming in the tiny crevice the absence of the splinter had left against his palm. His blood was still red. The same as any other human. Not black, green, or purple. Simple red.
Fist clenching, he grunted before breaking out into a mad dash. He could give up, wallow in self-pity, and eventually succumb to his demonic nature, or simply spend the rest of his life fighting against the insurmountable odds in front of him. Luckily for him, Shinzu always did love a good fight. Deep in combat, with adrenaline pumping with a thunderous heartbeat, it was the only time the voices couldn’t bother him. It was the only time his mind was still and calm. Even if it was only for a precious few moments, the peace served as a constant reminder that he is human – and what is more human than stubbornly rushing from one battle into the next?

Ordered to leave the premises, Shinzu took the hint and used the opportunity to crawl away from the guard before pulling himself off the damp and dirty ground. Thanks to recent rainfall, his clothes were now stained and a shade darker. “My apologies.” He said while reaching into his pocket once more. The action startled the guard again and pulled him into a defensive stance. He knew then at that moment that the guard was likely expecting a knife or some sort of projectile. However, all that would be clutched in Shinzu’s hand would be a crumpled pierce of paper. Balling it in his fist, he tossed the mission scroll at the guard, with enough speed and force to harmlessly strike the man's oversized forehead. “Your problem now.” He said while walking away from the scene. By now, several drunken bystanders had spotted the interaction. No doubt rumour would spread by morning and Shinzu would once again have to deal with the tattered mess that was his reputation.
“If I kill them all, then word won’t reach the guild.” Said the suggestible voice in Shinzu’s mind. Sighing again, he hoped the long and exaggerated exhale would be enough to clear his mind. It wasn’t. “Kill them all.” Said the commanding voice. “No one cares about me anyway.” Thought a voice, that Shinzu was uncertain was his or another’s. “I’m actually losing it.” He muttered out loud, to remind himself what his voice sounded like. Unsure where he was going, Shinzu simply wandered aimlessly while feeling a sharp burning sensation flaring in his stomach and the side of his face with each step forwards. Before long, he reached a tiny circular park surrounded by buildings. Along the circumference of the grassy park, he spotted four benches. At last, some luck.
Dragging his aching body towards one of the benches on the far end of the park, he sat down with a view of the road he had just walked down in case anyone was following him. It was rare, but at times, do-gooders tended to misread any situation he was involved in and took it upon themselves to strike down with the full might of ‘justice’. Those were the worst. Usually not even mages and just ordinary civilians, Shinzu knew not to do anything or even defend himself. If he fought back, it would only provoke more harm. If he actually won, word would spread like wildfire the next morning. Not of a mage defending himself against a unprovoked attack without even using any magic – but of a cruel and evil mage attacking a innocent bystander for no reason. Such was the way the world worked. "...I really don't belong here..."

Heading towards the loudest ramble of cheering and muttering, Shinzu eventually navigated the long winding streets of Shirotsume to find himself at the entrance of one of the largest bars in the town. With little personal information of his target, this appeared to be the most logical place to begin his search. Taking a step forward, he reached for the door, only to be blocked by a large burly man with a thick handlebar moustache. Blinking, he took in the sight before him as the boulder of a man thrust his body in-between Shinzu and the door. This was going to be harder than he initially thought. “I’m not here to cause any trouble.” He said, while giving the presumed security guard a apologetic glance.
Shinzu didn’t quite remember the man or the bar. However, the hostile reception made him more than aware of the fact that this was likely one of many bars he had been banned from in his youth. Somehow, he had worked out the idea that challenging people to spars in bars was a good idea. It even seemed to have worked at first. Intoxicated by alcohol, people tended to be more suggestible and willing to fight with Shinzu for some reason. That part had always been a success. However, brawling anywhere near a bar, let alone anywhere within the remote vicinity of one, seemed to be a great taboo in civilised human culture. Learning this very quickly, Shinzu crossed out all bars in his list of places to scout out a sparring partner. With that gone, he had little reason to visit any bars since. Alcohol, after all, was a substance he had never been willing to try. He had so little control over himself as it was, without another factor reducing it even further.
“Tear out his heart and feed it to him.” Said the foreign voice once again. Sighing while ignoring it, Shinzu reached his hand into his pocket to fish out the mission scroll. However, before he could complete the action, he felt a powerful force wallop the side of his face. Caught off guard and all concept of balance now alien to him, Shinzu crashed into the ground harshly. Grimacing, he slowly attempted to pick himself up only for the guard to slam his knee into Shinzu with enough force to wind him. “Deja vu.” He thought to himself, as another kick to the side of his face sent him rolling onto his side. “Tear out his eyeballs, and feast upon him!” Commanded the darker voice. Playing dead, he decided it would be better not to move for a few moments, which seemed to end the unprovoked assault.

“A Rune Knight’s idea of keeping Fiore safe tends to be different from what the common mage may think or want. At least, in my experience anyway.” Shinzu wasn’t wrong, so he held back the planned apology in his head. However, Topaz’s tone did reveal that she didn’t take too kindly to the blunt words. Deciding to at the very least back track or change the topic, he continued. “Just a personality clash, I suppose. Maybe good and bad are too harsh of a label to use.” What was he, after all? Anyone with even a smidgen of demon blood running through their veins tended to be labelled as bad, regardless of their motives or character. Such was the unfortunate truth of this world. One that he could not deny. When it came to demons, it tended to be better to attack before figuring out if the creature was malicious or not. Similarly, with Rune Knights, life went simpler if they were avoided, rather than sticking around long enough to figure out if one was in a grumpy mood or not.
“Huh? I didn’t attach this mask!” Shinzu retorted while also pointing at the markings underneath his eyes. In a rather exaggerated manner, he rubbed along them to show that they too were permanent features and not just coloured eyeliner. “All this just sorta grew on. I don’t have any control over it.” He said while crossing his arms stiffly. “I don’t have any control over anything.” Said the foreign voice within the inner confines of his mind once again. He noted that his mind certainly was lively today. Far more lively than usual. Perhaps this was the price to pay for those few minutes of peace earlier. “Beastman? Woah!” Caught off guard by the revelation, Shinzu began circling the woman to take in the sight before him. He couldn’t recall if Sabertooth had any Beastmen within the ranks. If it did, then they were likely the same variety as Topaz, with subtle features and no obvious signs of fur.
“I see. Makes sense.” Shinzu was clearly even more interested in sparing with Topaz after figuring out what she was. However, conversely, he was hesitant to reveal what he was in case it caused more harm than good. “Can’t wait to see Beastman magic! Although, isn’t it technically Beastwoman magic?” Visibly relaxing, Shinzu unfolded his arms the moment it became clear that the spar was going ahead. The thought of that alone was enough to make even the darkest of the voices in Shinzu’s head silent. “Well, if a Rune Knight is telling me it’s okay to spar there, then I’ll take your word for it.” He said, while stepping forwards the moment Topaz stepped back. “Let’s do it! Lead the way. I’ll even let you have the first strike. Go for a cheap shot if you want, but nothing below the belt.” He said nonchalantly while crossing his hands over each other in an exaggerated ‘X’ shape to show that there was honour even amongst brawlers that resorted to sucker punches.

“Rune Knight!? No way… You’re far too polite and respectful to be a Rune Knight…” Shinzu glared at Topaz while glancing at her entire body with deep focus. “You don’t look like you have a single bad bone in your body.” He said, while crossing his arms and giving Topaz a sceptical look. Clearly, Shinzu wasn’t on the best terms with the Rune Knights in Shirotsume. They were hardly enemies, and he wasn’t exactly public enemy number one to them. However, they certainly did make life a lot harder for him in the past until eventually being recruited under Sabertooth and gaining the guild’s protection. “You’re one of the good ones, then?” He said while observing the girl’s reaction.
Moments later, Shinzu found himself blinking as Topaz pointed out the mask fragment on his face. The question wasn’t a welcomed one. However, it was a million times better to simply be asked the question, than for people to randomly grab hold and attempt to yank it off his face. “Yep – it’s attached.” He demonstrated by tugging against a tooth lightly, which caused the entire mask fragment to stretch the skin around it. “It matches what I look like on the inside too.” Said a voice in Shinzu’s mind that didn’t belong to him. Startled by it, he shook his head rapidly as if to dismiss the foreign thought. Now was probably a good time to leave, he knew. Once the voices started, it was better to not be in public. However, something about the girl’s calm demeanour also helped make Shinzu feel calm.
“What about your ears? Did you always have them, or are they related to your magic?” The words would suggest that Shinzu’s mask fragment and other features were a consequence of his magic. However, he didn’t quite know if that was true. Would he have begun transforming and gained his demonic features even if he hadn’t learned Slayer magic? There was no way to know for sure. “Woah! Really!?” Leaping onto his feet and taking a step forward, Shinzu smiled with a glimmer in his eyes that seemed to reveal that in that moment, his mind was completely clear and focused. “I'm absolutely terrible with my magic – but this is a good way to learn, right?” Smiling from ear to ear, even his static mask fragment looked as if it was part of Shinzu’s smile at that moment. “Let’s do it! Oh, and don’t hold back. As long as you don’t break any bones, I heal pretty well.” He said, while taking another enthusiastic step closer to invade Topaz’s personal space. “Where though? I don’t want to end up wrecking this garden. Is there somewhere we can use magic without causing a public disturbance?” Shinzu put extra emphasis on those last two words, as if to suggest that he had heard them a lot.
