Courtesy of his mother’s tainted and demonic bloodline, a childhood of gruelling training, and manhood of relentless demon hunting, Shinzu grew up to become a man boasting a powerful physique. Tall, lean and muscular, he carries a powerful body well-defined with the bulges of thick muscle to support his tall frame. Deceptively slender despite all this, most are caught unaware of Shinzu’s raw agility and sheer physical force until it is too late.
Most notably, Shinzu’s iris are a shade of cobalt blue and rather uniquely, each strand of hair sports an unusual light blue hue that often serves to draw unwanted attention to himself. Cursed by the very demon blood he loathes and hopes to one day purge from his body, Shinzu sports teal stroke-shaped markings underneath each eye and a large demonic jawbone mask that stretches over the majority of the right side of his face – both of which permanent features resulting from early years of overusing his Devil Slayer magic.
Other signs of this demonic upbringing can also be found in the forms of thin silver lines scattered across his limbs, all of which are scars resulting from his youth being filled with rigorous daily training to keep his cursed powers in check. Although these are barely noticeable now, even from a close distance, the most prominent and noteworthy of all his scarring would be a large and thick vertical scar that stretches all the way from his collar bone down to his navel, which serves as a constant reminder that despite what his magic may suggest, he is nowhere near close to achieving the title of a Devil Slayer.

Having grown up knowing true loss, only to gain a new family in Saberooth, Shinzu has been known to be fiercely loyal to his guild to the point where he will often carry out instructions with few questions or hesitation. In essence, the perfect soldier – if not for his childish mentality. Having grown up knowing nothing aside from training and battling to survive, Shinzu will often be spotted going around challenging others to spars, which he rather competitively takes very seriously even against those much stronger or weaker than himself.
Despite being so focused and disciplined, a desire for battle and to grow stronger is often the root cause of Shinzu’s greatest weakness – the fact that he is a battle maniac. Rarely seen to flee from a fight with poor odds or a disadvantageous standoff, he has been known to cause trouble and can easily get distracted in the middle of a mission if something or someone more interesting to fight against turns up. Not to mention the fact that he is infamous for scaring potential recruits away by challenging even those with barely any magical potential or training to spars to gauge their talent. In essence, he’s the type that can really only understand or be understood through fighting.
Of course, that aside, Shinzu isn’t one of the lucky few who doesn’t carry around literal demons inside of him. Due to his horrific past and no less tortuous upbringing, Shinzu harbours a special hatred for demons, especially against those of the Grey Demon tribe. Though he won’t admit it out loud, many in the guild have already silently understood or started to suspect from his unusual features that demon blood partially runs through his veins, which is a unspoken truth he despises to no end, to the point where he desperately hopes shedding blood for his guild, a healthy lifestyle, and daily kale smoothies will one day rid him of any trace of his demonic heritage.
HISTORY
Much of Shinzu’s childhood is a mystery to him. He vaguely remembered the fact that his village thrived off of the support of the Grey Demon tribe – a clan of demons known for their winged grey forms. Even at such a young age, he knew that his village prospered not from unity with the Demon tribe, but from a parasitic relationship where the village would be protected if a sacrificial tribute was offered to the Demon tribe once each year, just before the harvest season would commence. There seemed to be no other signs of demonic influence in the village, as far he could recall. People were happy, and free to come and go. However, the yearly blood sacrifice was the one iron clad rule that had to be followed.
What was the norm for most, seemed to be a disturbing reality for the rare few that couldn’t stomach the sacrifice of their kin. Besides, for what really? No one had seen the so-called Grey Demon tribe for years. Did they really exist? Although in fear of the rumours, bandits or outside forces had never attacked the village, they were not protected against famine, disease, or the natural elements. In fact, the bounty of any crops they laboured over never seemed to be of any particular noteworthy yield. Divided factions began to wonder if the rumours were simple stories. An outdated and barbaric tradition that should have died a long time ago. If only that had been true. Perhaps Shinzu’s childhood would have been different.
Overruled by the majority, the village failed to offer up a blood sacrifice one fateful day on the yearly harvest festival. It was at that very night, when the moon reached its pinnacle at the sky, that the villagers discovered the sinister truth. The Grey Demon tribe had not left or been observing the village from afar. They were right there. Transformed into village elders. As orphaned children. As parents. As mothers. They had become interwoven within the many generations of the village’s society. However, fuelled by their cursed blood, nothing could stop the Grey Demons from reverting to their full demonic forms and reducing the humans of the village to nothing more than ash. Some seemed to take great pleasure in the act, Shinzu recalled. Others were indifferent to the massacre and revealed no more emotion than would be needed to wipe a stain from a pristine plate.
Shinzu never could understand why the massacre needed to happen. He couldn’t even understand what role his mother played in it. Awakened as a demon, her entire persona seemed to have changed. Life and death seemed to be concepts alien to her. He remembered pleading her to stop, before simply asking why she had destroyed everything once precious to her. He remembered crying in front of her, desperately asking for answers. Had everything been a cruel game? Or had the Demon tribe lost their sanity and been forced to commit the act? Shinzu never really knew or understood. The only harsh reality was the fact that along with a rare few others who also carried just enough Demon particles within their blood to not be targeted in the massacre, he had been allowed to live. A curse, he always considered, more than boon.
Swallowed by grief, anger, and a small portion of insanity, Shinzu chose to remain with the Grey Demon tribe, rather than leaving the village with the others still mostly human. Fuelled by a child’s notion of vengeance, he spent years growing up alongside the twisted Grey Demons and the ash-stained village once bustling with life and joy. For years, he ate, grew and lived alongside the Demons to understand them. To grow as powerful as them, to one day rid the world of them. In time and upon reaching teen-hood, it almost started to become a daily occurrence where Shinzu would attempt to assassinate one of the demons during their sleep or during a prime moment where they would appear to be distracted. Of course, as relentless as he was, he was powerless and would simply be smacked around until forced to give up for the day.
Despite eventually learning to harness the same magic the Grey Demon tribe used, Shinzu never even got close to even injuring any of the Demons. Even attempting to find ways of transforming them back to their once human-like selves seemed beyond the realm of possibility. It all seemed hopeless, until one day, something new awakened within Shinzu after eighteenth birthday, on the same harvest festival night that had claimed his friends and family all those many moons ago – madness. Pure demonic madness. With a sliver of something inhuman awakened inside of himself, Shinzu steadily realised that all the years of tapping into Demon magic had been steadily transforming him into the exact entities he hated and despised.
Knowing that he was losing himself to his demonic self, both mentally and physically, Shinzu resolved to end his life by one day attacking the Grey Demon he somehow always knew to be his mother. Perhaps if he fought hard and long enough, he’d force the Demon’s hand. However, at that moment, something rather strange happened. He attacked as he always did. From the shadows, and while the Demon was asleep. He attacked with the same futile ferocity and anger as always. However, strangely, a ashen attack which had never so much as even scratched one of the Demons, had somehow successfully injured his mother and sent her into a frenzy of pain and howling. Shocked by whatever had awakened within him, Shinzu hesitated and was dealt a single savage blow by his mother that had near instantly torn his chest open vertically.
Oddly, there seemed to be no pain at that moment, at least, none he could remember. He simply remembered feeling cold and sleepy, despite the warmth of all his blood pooling underneath him. Darkness, quickly came to him, despite how hard he tried to force his heavy eyelids open. A long sleep awaited Shinzu thereafter, only for him to eventually awake one morning to find that the Demon tribe were gone. They had left the forever ashy remains of the village without a trace. The only memento of their existence seemed to be the tainted demonic features Shinzu had been left with, and a large scar across his chest that seemed to have almost supernaturally healed shut, as if to mockingly invite him to simply try again.
INVENTORY
ITEM NAME: Angel Arm - ?
RANK: N/A
DESCRIPTION: Angel Arms are said to be partly sentient weapons or relics of angelic origin, and are associated with great power capable of slaying Demons. It is said that whispering the name of a Demon tribe into the weapon will permanently attune its overwhelming power into specifically slaying Demon-kin of that origin. Unfortunately, whether this is a false replica or not, the weapon's powers appear to have been sealed away and will not function until the blade's true name is discovered; rendering it effectively no more useful than a mundane katana. Whatever the case, Shinzu is adamant that this is a true Angel Arm, based on the fact that he can somehow sense the weapon’s desire to kill him.
SPELLS: N/A
MAGIC
NAME: Ash Devil Slayer
TYPE: Lost
RANK: B
DESCRIPTION: Magic harnessed and taught by the Grey Demon tribe. Devil Ash Slayers are resistant to the harmful effects of ingesting, inhaling, or being infected by magical ash. They are even capable of ingesting ash of both natural and supernatural origins to replenish their lifeforce and magical energy. As ash is a substance that can no longer burn, magical ash is naturally adept at driving away and dispersing spells related to fire or heat. In particular, the user can generate highly coarse ash boasting powerful slashing force originating from the Grey Demon tribe’s leader - Asmodeus, the Ash Devil. Such ash is known for being coarser than even sand, making it a highly effective tool for unleashing a variety of offensive and even debilitating effects.
DRAWBACKS: One of ash magic’s greatest strengths, is also its most grave flaw. Ash magic is quite light and carries little weight to it despite its coarse nature. Although this can be useful at times, it does mean that the magic is especially weak to wind magic or anything capable of blasting away any lingering particles in the air. Prolonged wind effects can even potentially nullify an Ash Devil Slayer’s ability to transform their body parts into ash, making it a rather difficult element to counter. Overuse of this magic is particularly dangerous to half-demons, as it can force them to take on demonic traits until eventually, they succumb to the evil taint of their blood and transform permanently into an Ash Devil like Asmodeus himself. Users often battle with this inner corruption and are forced to resist their demonic urges or impulses constantly, including when their magic is not even in use.
SPELLS:
NAME: Ash Devil’s Clamour
TYPE: Offensive
RANK: B
MODS: Affliction (Blind), Damage over Time, Area of Effect
DESCRIPTION: The user places his hands close together, palms facing each other, to create a magic circle between the empty space of his hands. In a clapping gesture, he then slams his palms together to cause a vortex of coarse ash to explode out from his body in a sphere-shaped spiralling fashion to lacerate everything around him for C-Rank damage. Ash Devil particles are known to linger and irritate. Anyone entering an area while or after Ash Devil’s Clamour has been performed will be left blinded for 3 Rounds if not wearing any equipment to protect their eyes, and they will suffer an additional C-Rank damage each round from the coarse ash spiralling around in the air. After four rounds, the ash will dissipate naturally and simply linger harmlessly along the air, effectively ending the technique.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Bellow
TYPE: Offensive
RANK: B
MODS: Overcharge
DESCRIPTION: The user takes in a deep breath, while allowing a magic circle to form in front of his mouth. Abruptly and sharply, he then exhales into the magic circle, to fire a thin twister of coarse ash at a single target. Due to the sheer force of the exhale, the target caught by the twister will be left utterly lacerated for A-Rank damage. However, unlike with other Ash Devil Slayer techniques, the great force behind this technique will cause the ash particles involved in the technique to dissipate near instantly, preventing them from lingering in the air.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Woe
TYPE: Defensive
RANK: B
MODS: Reflect, Area of Effect (Ranged)
DESCRIPTION: The user targets an area rich with ash particles, either around themselves, or an area in the distance to cause a magic circle to light up momentarily. If a spell enters the designated area and clashes with the magic circle, the circle will suddenly light up to block the spell. Ash particles will then suddenly begin spewing from the circle before swallowing the opposing spell to fire it back at the caster in the form of a spiralling twister of ash and whatever element the reflected spell consists of. As this spell can be used at range, it can even reflect spells not aimed at the user. However, this spell requires the use of existing ash particles, and so can only be cast in designated zones where a spell has already been used that has enriched the air with lingering ash.
NAME: Ash Devil’s Ascent
TYPE: Defensive
RANK: B
MODS: Barrier, Flight
DESCRIPTION: The user conjures a magic circle around his back, which immediately sprouts two grey ashen wings. By default, the wings will appear feathery and rather mundane. However, the closer the user is to madness and corruption, the more demonic of an appearance the wings will take. The ashen wings can be used to achieve flight, or even to achieve a short-ranged burst of speed to evade well-telegraphed attacks. The wings can also drape over the user to block C-Rank worth of damage. However, as the wings are mirror duplicates of each other, destroying one wing will automatically cause the other to also dissipate into a harmless cloud of lingering ash.
