Iago Chernobog - better known in some circles as Indigo - was not an assassin. Contrary to what bits and pieces of rumor had foretold, he wasn’t the sort to go after anyone who breathed in his direction. Hell, even if he was paid, he wasn’t the kind of person to just kill for the sake of killing. No life was sacred to him, of course. No one held any particular importance over anyone else, and no one deserved special treatment over their fellow man. Demons, demigods, humans, whatever someone was? It didn’t matter to him. They were all the same in the end: Just skeletons in bodies trying to make the most out of a life that none of them had actually asked for to begin with. His indifference was intoxicating to some, mostly the perverse few who thought that his obvious dislike of them translated into some yearning for their company (spoiler: it didn’t), but in this case… [break][break]
Well. This case was special. [break][break]
After word spread of his unfortunate disposition, a wealthy family came into contact with him. He didn’t care to know their names, ask for their credentials, or anything of the sort. What mattered was that they were offering him a metric ton of jewels to deal with a murderer let loose in the winter wonderland of the Hinterlands, and he wasn’t about to turn them down. He wanted money. He had to feed himself, and buy new clothes, and generally exist without the hanging threat of bankruptcy putting a dent in his mood every other minute. Every second he looked at his empty wallet, he loathed the fact that the jewels from his previous mission were deemed as unacceptable to most vendors. [break][break]
Sure, they could take something ripped straight from a corpse. Bills that were bloodied posed no threat to the person accepting them. But no, when he showed bills that were only majorly damaged thanks to water exposure and a hint of brief exposure to insane amounts of heat, he was wrong for telling them to take it. Wrong for threatening them too, but he digressed. [break][break]
The point of his tangent was that, in spite of it all, he wanted to get the money. He didn’t care about the people the infamous ‘Ullr’ had killed, he didn’t care about their families, he didn’t give a general shit about whatever traumatic event occurred so far back in the other man’s past to make him commit such vile deeds. He cared about the wad of jewels awaiting him if he managed to do his job right - even if it meant working alongside others. [break][break]
He didn’t know the specifics of his colleagues as he waited at the winter border, tapping his foot impatiently against the ground. His coat had been doubled up underneath a fur shawl, scars hidden under a scarf that had been wrapped a multitude of times around his neck and jaw. Gloves covered the latent marks on his hands. His leg had been thankfully healed, meaning that he wouldn’t have been limping, but he may have been getting his ass kicked in the future if anyone found out about his identity. He didn’t know if he had been associated with the massive fit at Hargeon or not, but it was always best to play it safe. Anyone who kept up with the news in that town was likely aware of the brawl, but if they knew of the person behind it… Ah, he was worrying himself too much. [break][break]
He just had to wait for the others to get there, that was all. No matter who they were, he was confident that he would be able to do his job and get the fuck out of the area by nightfall with a load of compensation rich in his pockets. [break][break]
Hopefully it’ll be easy. [break][break]
…[break][break]
And I probably just jinxed myself. Crap. [break][break]

Open to Anyone Interested - 3 Participants Max MISSION NAME: Dead Calm MISSION CLASS: B PARTICIPANTS: IAGO , Topaz , An MISSION DESCRIPTION: Alright. His last endeavor didn't go quite according to plan, but whatever. Iago Chernobog can't just sit back and do nothing - He has to get money to buy crap with, after all! With a few rumors here and there circulating about him being an assassin for hire (he's not gonna object to them, of course, he's way too lazy for that crap), he gets approached for a particular job alongside someone else. With the group having accepted their mission, they're told to meet up near the Boreal Hinterlands to start the hunt. The target is none other than one Ullr Stormheart. His magical strength is as apparent as his overly dramatic name, but three times as fatal. See, Ullr over here has been killing traveling mages and taking limbs as trophies. Combine that with the fact that he recently took out a fairly wealthy traveler, and... well, you know where this is going. A wealthy family gets into contact with our heroes and sends them towards Ullr's hunting ground on an old country path in the Hinterlands and, after a bit of searching, they discover a recently inhabited cabin. Looks like he lives in that crappy place all alone. Ought to be an easy problem to solve as long as he doesn't have anyone else on his side, right? Oh. Nevermind. He apparently has a few bandit friends who are also pretty good at magic. Because of course he does. Regardless, Iago and his unfortunate partner are getting paid quite a hefty sum for either straight up killing or apprehending this guy. Whichever works, really. Best to not disappoint the buyers, yeah?

His aim was true. In a burst of splendid red, his card soared forward, heat exploding off from Iago’s shoulders in the process of the grand release. The titular Hangman card soared forward, striking his opponent straight in the skull, but the impact carried. The force of it sent the body back to the water with a sickening crash, condemning the only remaining mage to a sort of cursed silence as his chest heaved up and down. His entire body was tense. His free hand had scraped his nails so far against the concrete that white streaks were left in his wake. [break][break]
Slowly, he shifted his position to kneel. He tore one sleeve off from his coat, wrapping it around his bloodied leg and ankle. He could still move the limb with relative ease, but the blood-loss was his main concern. As long as he could get away before the Rune Knights arrived, he would be fine. Gods knew he didn’t trust them, and they likely wouldn’t have believed his little tale. A wanderer setting fire to multiple ships and killing four, one of whom was a wealthy heir… [break][break]
Oh. [break][break]
Oh, he wanted to curse as he stood. That was right. Fierro was wealthy. He had the world in his pocket, a decent amount of riches allowing him to hire Iago for the job to begin with. He gathered the soaked jewel bills from the ground with a scowl rich on his features, a limp clear in his stride as he started walking. He’d need to get out of Hargeon, then head either to Magnolia or to the capital city - if only to investigate the greater root behind it all. Fierro had gotten involved in the illegal market somehow and, if the rest of his family was as worthless yet damned as the boy himself, Iago may have found himself in a fair bit of trouble once word spread of the youngster’s demise. [break][break]
He cast a single glance over his shoulder as rain began pouring down, as if to make sure that the scene was still there. The fires were beginning to be put out by the oncoming downpour, limiting the overall damage done to other ships, but the artifacts themselves… No, there would be no recovering them. Not at all, not at all. [break][break]
Good. He had saved himself some trouble - and, by chance, spared other mages a great deal of strife. [break][break]
… Doesn’t change the fact that someone wanted to trade that crap.
He shook his head, putting his hands into his pockets. He plucked out his iron piercings, beginning to put them in one by one across a wicked grin. Ah, the thought of dealing with more of Fierro’s kin shouldn’t have excited him, but it did! There was a mystery afoot, something unique going on behind the scenes. Was it a grander scheme than he anticipated? Likely not. Wealthy families being a little corrupt was nothing new to him, for he had always been skeptical of those who hoarded their wealth like drakes and dragons. [break][break]
Those who had too much always took advantage of those who had too little. [break][break]
It made him grateful to be nestled in that cherished in-between. Not wealthy, not poor, not particularly well off but not begging for food. He could make do with what he had. [break][break]
He dismissed irrelevant thoughts, focusing his attention on gathering his things at the inn, then heading out from Hargeon to track down whoever remained on Fierro’s family tree. If anyone would know what the boy was really dealing with, and where he had gotten those artifacts, then surely a relative would have been able to point the hangman in one direction or another. [break][break]
Even if I’m grasping at straws… it’ll at least give me something to do. Better than being bored, that's for damn sure. [break][break]

He struggled. For the life of him, Iago clawed at his attacker. He brought his hands up and raked his nails across the captain’s skull, grabbing onto anything he could. Yet, the beast of a man didn’t seem to notice; The red from his blood began staining the water more than either of them cared for, bubbles escaping as his lungs continued to yearn for the slightest gasp of air. Any moment, his maw would open, and he would inhale water. He would drown, then. Iago would die. That would be it. His life would end without a large bang - Gods, he wanted death, but not like this! [break][break]
The former leader opened his mouth to say something, though his words came out as only a bubbled scream. Up close, Iago could make out how the man had faintly survived the original explosion; Gills poked out from his neck, markings telling the tale of old gods and demons sprawled across his arms and legs. This was Take Over magic, he realized, the worst kind to deal with in the vast majority of situations. True, though, the man had taken a fair amount of damage from the explosion: His chest was punctured by a multitude of wooden shards, spilling out more of his blood into the open water. [break][break]
They struck the bottom of the harbor with a dissonant thud. His vision was blurring, his lungs were burning, his senses were muddled - Oh, gods, he was dying. He was either dying or on the verge of losing consciousness. Maybe he was overthinking it, maybe he was fine, maybe he didn’t have to worry about something like this! Maybe he would be just fine, but he knew that wouldn’t be the case, but maybe it could be if he hoped enough - Gah, but hope had never done anything for him! Being hopeful had gotten him into this mess! [break][break]
He grabbed a fist-full of drenched sand, ignoring the stinging sensation that came from it being in contact with his old wounds, and threw it at the other. Instinct was his greatest weapon against his foe in this situation; The captain’s hands relinquished themselves from around Iago’s throat to try to brush away as much of the sand as possible, allowing the mage enough time to orientate himself and push back towards the surface. He felt the dagger rip against the back of his neck in the middle of his rush to the surface, but that didn’t slow him down: He was kicking as fast as he could, ignoring the pain, doing everything in his power to breach the surface. [break][break]
He popped out from the water as a gasping mess, hurriedly crawling back under the rope and onto solid land. He coughed up bits and droplets of water that instinct had inhaled, blood gushing out from his wounds. The bastard had gone for his leg to limit mobility, but why? The dagger could have gone right for his neck, for his back, for anywhere else. [break][break]
A grim realization set in as the water behind him stirred. [break][break]
He knows I can still move, he just knows I can't move quickly with a wound like that. He was trying to keep my options limited. [break][break]
Shit. [break][break]
Unable to stand on his own two feet in the moment, Iago pulled himself as far back from the sea as he could, dull eyes fixated on where he had come up from a split-second prior. He could hear the sea crashing. Thunder broke out above him, the first droplet of rain striking his shoulder. [break][break]
If it starts raining, I’m not going to be able to use my fire all too well… [break][break]
Exhaustion was already clawing at him. With every passing second, his rush was fading. One more usage of his magic was all he had left in him, both due to the initial usage of Hangman, and because of the heat he had been exposed to. Any more than that, and he wouldn’t have been able to run if the Rune Knights got a lock on him… and, more importantly, wouldn’t have been able to get away from the situation without wearing a pair of handcuffs. [break][break]
He couldn’t have put up a good fight if he was kept down by blood-loss or his injuries. His endurance was notable, he knew he could have kept going in their brawl, but efficiency was key. If he couldn’t move fast, then he was as good as dead.[break][break]
A card sparked to life between his digits as a monster emerged, jaws open wide, claws extended. This was a pure beast take-over, Iago realized. He was likely far more durable than the artifact he had struck earlier. [break][break]
For all of a single second, they appeared to be a painting. A cowering mage, a rampaging beast, lightning cracking between them. [break][break]
Then, like a disaster finally striking land, destruction erupted as a bitter parting gift from one wanderer to his misguided foe. [break][break]

[attr="class","onlytimeleft"]
He resurfaced with a bitter gasp. His lungs burned for oxygen by the time he made it back to the surface, a few seconds feeling like an eternity to the cast-out mage. He held his coat in one hand, though quickly shifted it to be held in his maw akin to a mutt swimming with a toy. Pieces of flaming rubble drifted nearby, the crackle of wood and latent artifacts lighting up the night’s atmosphere as a serenade to tired ears. He made his way through the water with limited success, wrapping his arms around a piece of nearby - and thankfully extinguished - rubble. [break][break]
There was no sign of life from the skeletal remains of the ship. He could make out the faint impression of a body floating near the surface, no older than Iago himself, but lacking in every possible department where maturity was concerned. A few meters away from him, a woman’s body was slung loosely over a piece of drifting rubble. She, too, was unmoving. He wouldn’t have been surprised if the toad, who had been closest to the artifacts at the time of their detonation, had evaporated completely via the blast. Such a shame that the fool was already dead. Had he been alive for the blast, Iago may have gotten the chance to hear the final cry of someone who had been completely and utterly eradicated in the blink of an eye. [break][break]
Granted, he doubted it would have been much of a scream. It would have been more like a sharp inhale once he registered what was going on, then a rigid tenseness falling over his body. Maybe a mouthed ‘goodbye’ or ‘oh shit’. Nothing that would have distracted the mage from his final task, of course. [break][break]
The thought made him chuckle as he reached the harbor’s wall, abandoning his rubble. He placed his hands against it, feeling for any plausible cracks in the stone. Once he realized that climbing up wouldn’t have been an option normally, he allowed himself to sink, diving until he struck the bottom. Then, it was a matter of pushing himself off as hard as he could. Gods blessed his natural strength, Fairy Tail’s training paying off in a single instant (read as: multiple, multiple instances). He pushed himself out of the water, hands barely grasping the ropes separating the walkway from the open sea. [break][break]
He pulled himself up and through the ropes, then turned to lay on his back for all of a few moments. He could hear the faint cries of witnesses who were no doubt shaken from their beds from the prior explosion and, as he sat up, saw the full extent of his damages. [break][break]
The fire had not been contained, nor had the explosion. It had spread to two ships on either side of the original vessel, no doubt causing a great deal in monetary damages in the process. Ah, and on that note - he strayed his hands down to the pockets of his coat, pulling out wads of soaked jewels. To say that he scowled would have been a drastic understatement; The fact of the matter was that his upfront payment had turned sour. He cast the wads to the side, disgust and annoyance clear on his features. Of course, the bills had gotten ruined. Why wouldn’t they? He couldn’t have anything nice where money was concerned, damn it. [break][break]
On that note, however, his attention would trail down to his wounded arm. From the elbow down, his skin had been marred and cut ought to hell. He could faintly make out the impression of bare muscle and tendons beneath the surface, scarlet coating his wounded limb. It wouldn’t be enough to kill him, he reckoned, but it would surely be a pain in the ass to explain to a healer. How had he wounded his arm in such a way? Well, clearly he had been milking cows when one of them decided to commit a crime and attack him without mercy. [break][break]
He wrung his hand out, wincing as the remnants of sea water fell onto the rest of his body. He hadn’t gotten away entirely unscathed from the woman’s blast, either; Now that he looked closer, her initial fireball had cost him quite a deal in terms of skin on his lower arms. His right and left had both suffered severe burns, the pain kicking in as his adrenaline rush began to fade away into oblivion. [break][break]
Iago clenched his jaw, then began working his way back up to his feet. He’d have to get out of the area quickly, lest the Rune Knights arrive and take him to be some sort of mass killer. Of course, that was an action he had committed over the course of the night: Killing the group had taken more out of him than he anticipated, but it had been done. There was no guilt present in his eyes nor in his body language as he pulled his coat back on over his shoulders, slipping his arms through the sleeves. Idly, he’d reach down to inspect the oaken box, pulling it off from his waist and absentmindedly going through a few of the cards. None of them had been too damaged by the water, which he was thankful for. Replacing them was always a pain, given the rarity of the specific designs he adored to the moon and ba–[break][break]
“Fu––”[break][break]
The curse rang out as a wave of pain erupted around his ankle. No sooner had he looked down to see what it was than had he been greeted by the same dagger that had wrapped around his arm - except rather than merely coiling around the limb, it had fully pierced through his ankle, going through muscle and bone alike. The sudden force of its pull sent Iago off from his feet and onto the ground, the mage scrambling for something - anything - to hold onto. [break][break]
He found himself back in the water a split-second later, his breath barely held, his eyes wide for once in his life. [break][break]
Knew I forgot about someone! [break][break]

[attr="class","onlytimeleft"]
The first of the trio was that, amid it all, a flash went off as green coiled around amber. The wail of the feminine mage brought a swell of pride to his chest, the woman stumbling back with her hands clasped around her eyes. That was the secondary effect of his magician’s trick; Not only did the clone manage to seemingly get a decent strike in on her via the gash now present on her cheek, but it managed to blind her with the ensuing midnight supernova. He wondered what it must have felt like to be in her shoes, but he would cast these thoughts to the side a moment later. There was no point in wasting his time on something so arbitrary when there was something more concerning to deal with. [break][break]
On that note, the secondary motion in the moment was that his cards vanished around Fierro. Thankfully, like with the woman’s encounter with his clone, this did not come without substantial loss for the young lord. He imagined that his sense of self was torn apart, his balance clearly suffering from the way the cards had swarmed around his sense of vision. He stumbled, then leaned back against the railing, face turning green. His eyes were wide and full of indescribable terror; By chance, he may have finally realized the monster that he had brought on board. Iago’s leash had been promptly cut off, but not by his master’s scissors, no. He had torn through it with his fangs, and now stood among them as a berserker with a sickening grin serving as the only indicator for his mood. [break][break]
Yet, he would not have time to delight in Fierro’s mental anguish for long. A blade snapped through the air, a whip-like crack snatching his attention away from his would-be employer. The flat of a familiar dagger coiled around Iago’s left arm, yanking him to the side. He stomped one foot down, planting it through the deck to keep himself from being hauled back too far against his will, but the pull was still there. He couldn’t resist it forever and, judging by the way green flames were currently engulfing anything and everything around him, breaking out of it sooner would have been vastly preferable to breaking out of it later. [break][break]
Alas, his thoughts would be swiftly cut off by the blade turning. The flat shifted, turning onto its side in order to cut into his skin. It tightened, cutting through scared and untouched skin alike - and, for once, drawing out a sharp hiss of pain from the mage in question. His blood dripped down from the wound, smoke coiling up from his scars in growing amounts. He couldn’t sit back and act as though everything was going according to plan when the risk of losing a limb had appeared out of thin air. [break][break]
“You,” Fierro wheezed, doing everything in his power to stand up straight. Iago could hear the faint sound of scratching behind him, no doubt from the person trying to use him as a personalized anchor in order to stay hinged to the side of the ship. How the man hadn’t fallen in already, he didn’t know. Maybe it was some application of the stranger’s magic. Maybe he just had a very good grasp on how to hold on for dear life. “You bastard.” [break][break]
“Mhm,” Iago could only make a low hum in response, clenching his jaw. The blade was digging in deeper and deeper still, refusing to let him move forward. If he took too many steps, it’d be ripped off. If he didn’t find a way out of it, it’d be torn off. [break][break]
God, losing a limb would have sucked. [break][break]
Which means I need to think a way out of this - [break][break]
A few feet ahead of him, the artifacts were quivering. Flames were causing cracks to appear around them, damage done over time increasing their garnered instability by double digits. His gaze shot to his coat nearby, still against the barrier where he had left it - and, more importantly, to the mess of icon desperately pulling against the inside of one of his pockets. [break][break]
Heat culminated at his fingertips. Was it a ridiculous move? Of course. Hell, if he didn’t time it right, it would have cost him more than he cared to admit. The loss of an arm would have drastically reduced his capacity to do proper readings - let alone defend himself from future threats. [break][break]
I might combust, but the water may help with that. [break][break]
He looked to Fierro, bidding the other a one-handed salute. He wasn’t even sure if his former employer saw it. All he knew was that, as he lifted the weight from his foot and allowed himself to be pulled back by the blade’s grip, there was only one real answer to his growing solution. [break][break]
Flames danced on his shoulders. He dipped down to gather his coat, the blade wrapped around his arm beginning to slide down and mar him from the elbow down - [break][break]
Just as he was yanked over the edge of the ship by the blade’s end, a card manifested between his fingers. Single and engulfed by flames of his own, Iago would only offer a slight grin as he let it fly directly towards the artifact that had originally attracted his metal. [break][break]
He struck the water at the same time as an explosion shook the surface, a wave of infernal heat scorching through the water. The blade relinquished itself from around him, a howl sounding from the surface as a radiant swarm of multi-colored flames lit up the midnight world above him. [break][break]
It stung. [break][break]

[attr="class","onlytimeleft"]
He wasn’t the type of combatant to let someone get a hit in. No, Iago’s physical strength was impressive - boulders quaked when he struck them, if they didn’t outright break apart - but the true advantage he held over others was that brash speed. He may not have appeared to teleport, but he was still upon them in an instant; The woman was only slightly slower than the mage himself, meeting him in a slash of claws that would have sheared straight through his skin, had Iago not taken a swift step back. His eyes widened at her sudden speed, having not expected the sudden burst of power from her. He had hoped she would have been a nobody who happened to get lucky with an artifacts blessing, not someone on par with him. [break][break]
Then that means her leader - [break][break]
He ducked to the side, abandoning the immediate slaughter he had planned. His mind raced at a thousand miles per hour, eyes tracking each movement that his opponents made. Far to his left, he could make out the faint sliver of Fierro making a mad dash towards the ramp. Cards swarmed around Iago’s form for all of a split second, a move seemingly identical to the gambit he had performed only moments taking form - before whipping forward, surrounding his employer in a vortex of ungodly tarots. He could hear the muffled wails of a man now trapped, though his attention was quick to shift back to the two brutes currently running at him with all their might. [break][break]
Of course, it’s going to be a fight. [break][break]
He stepped back, his back now against the railing, and braced his hands against the top of it. The moment the woman struck, Iago pushed himself off of the ground, lifting his feet onto the border that separated the deck from the rest of the sea. He must have looked like a gargoyle for all of a single second before he moved once more, lifting himself on his hands and kicking his feet forward to nail the woman right in her nose. He relinquished his grip on the balcony, falling back to his feet on the desk with a small thud. [break][break]
The woman stumbled back, clutching at her now broken nose, while her boss glared daggers at their mutual attacker. He only mustered a smug smile as the brute charged, an artifact swept up from the ground clutched between his hands. It was akin to a dagger, but unlike the weapon at the same time. The edge curved upwards, seemingly going into a loop, while the rest of the blade was relatively flat. Had someone taken a mallet to it while it was still in the forge, turning a would-be perfect dagger into the remnants of a devil’s curved horn? [break][break]
No, there was no time to think about that. He had to avoid getting stabbed, after all. [break][break]
Though, how would getting stabbed work with that sort of weapon? [break][break]
Nevermind, nevermind, nevermind. [break][break]
He stepped to the side, narrowly avoiding the initial jab. He pressed his knee up against the other’s abdomen, grabbing his left hand in the process, then throwing his weight back with the pivot of his heel. The result was a satisfying flip, sending the brute right over the edge of the ship. By all means, he should have tried to ensure that there was actually a splash - if only to make sure that the other hadn’t somehow found a way to hide against the side of the ship.[break][break]
Sadly, he wouldn’t get the chance. [break][break]
The feminine fatal was back on her feet, and she was pissed. An uttered spell-name prepared him for her attack only slightly as she barged towards his side, the dead man barely having enough time to raise his hands to cross them over his chest in an ‘X’ shape. A burst of green fire struck him, sending him flying back and striking the deck with a heavy thud. He rose back to his feet, utilizing the momentum from his fall to kick his legs over his head in a short flip, yet kept his posture to the ground. It was only when she began to release another burst that he dared to stand, bolting to the side in a mad sprint to avoid waves of emerald that sought to consume him whole. [break][break]
She must not have been too terribly bright, for each burst of her own fire began catching the ship itself aflame. Every emerald swarm caused another portion to ignite, the beating waves beneath them allowing the flames to spread with greater speed. Crates were ignited. Artifacts sputtered and sparked as the blaze threatened to engulf them too, a sickening idea coming to his mind as temporary shelter was taken behind the mast. She would keep firing until she knew she had him cornered, no regard for her own safety in feline hues. [break][break]
Damn it. He cursed under his breath, one hand raising to rest against his forehead. His temperature was already rising, smoke beginning to emerge out from his scars as though they were nothing more than flaps of cloth meant to retain an internal blaze. The more he used his magic, the more he would find himself burning alive. The more of her attacks he took, the more likely it was that he would catch on fire anyways. [break][break]
There was no ‘good’ way out of it. He either combusted on his own terms, or he combusted against his will. [break][break]
Cards danced between his digits, the oaken case on his side slightly charred as it was. How lucky he was that it hadn’t combusted -[break][break]
A plan came forward. He could hear her heels starting to click against the wood on her approach, his hands fumbling only slightly to withdraw a single card out from his deck. The dead man took a deep breath, pressing a swift and fleeting kiss to the edge of a treasure unlike any other - before flinging it to his side. A fury of gold embraced him, a double emerging and racing in the same direction as the card once the other mage’s burst of green faded. At the same time, Iago would move out from his shelter, two scarred deities emerging from the same area. [break][break]
Her focus was bound to be on the clone as he moved forward; True to form, he noticed that her eyes were fixated on the blur of violet and indigo that struck her with an immediate blow, the faint hum of green at her fingertips giving him enough information to show that she was ready to unleash another blast. [break][break]
He nearly tripped over his own feet as he struggled to turn amid his sprint, gaze locked on Fierro. He was the one who owed the dead man the most explanations, the one who could not be killed before he explained what the hell was going on. [break][break]
Ah, but three things would happen in rapid succession. [break][break]
None of them would be good for him. [break][break]
Nothing ever is. [break][break]

[nospaces] [attr="class","onlytime"]
[attr="class","onlytimeleft"]
The onslaught followed the declaration like thunder with lightning. Cards moved out from his collective as a swarm in every direction, piercing the bodies of friend and foe alike. Then again, he doubted he could honestly call anyone present a friend. There were only foes and a single individual who, as the dust settled, lowered a magical shield and glared daggers at the magician responsible for the mayhem. It wasn’t as though Iago expected him to wear any other expression as a sickening thud rang out, the body of the toad falling just shy of Iago’s feet - or where his feet should have been. The mage himself had seemingly vanished, reappearing near the helm of the ship as a devil might have; Surrounded by cards, mischievous, enraged. [break][break]
The poor frog bastard had been cut ought to hell - and, with a slow glimmer forming, his form shifted into someone who, in contrast to his previous appearance, would have been perfectly at home in a crowded market. [break][break]
That kind of magic? Iago blinked, then squinted. That’s… Huh. So he was ready for a fight- [break][break]
Fierro stopped dead in his tracks as Iago’s attention turned to the now broken crates. His steps came slow and purposeful as he began to move back towards the remaining three, ire painstakingly clear. [break][break]
His capabilities were one of the few things that he’d have to thank his ancestors for in terms of magic potential: His destruction was often enough to dig more than a few graves if he put his heart into it, though he didn’t enjoy that sentiment too much. He’d much rather take the lives of absolute scum through throttling them with his own two hands than he would have killing them with his magic, noting that one took far more effort than the other - but these were thoughts of a wanderer slowly growing angrier as the stars twinkled above him, empty eyes set firm on a collection of artifacts sitting visible underneath the remains of their temporary homes. [break][break]
Each one pulsated with an uncanny light. Some were larger than others, but Iago could recognize each one based off of appearance alone. They were combat items. Creations meant to cause harm to others, to be utilized alongside one’s natural weaponry in order to absolutely demolish any who stood before them - [break][break]
And, among them, stood one that reeked of ocean salt. A cornucopia with water dripping down from the opening, despite the fact that none of them had seemingly gotten wet during their time below deck. [break][break]
“It won’t concern me, huh?” Iago began, slowly turning to face Fierro. “It won’t concern me?” He pointed to the dripping object in question. “None of this will concern me?” He looked back to the other leader who, all things considered, was taking the less of an acquaintance rather well. He wasn’t on the ground sobbing, merely brushing off a spec of the toad’s blood that had landed on his cheek. “What were you going to do with all of this?” [break][break]
“I don’t have to tell you that.” The boss replied. [break][break]
“Oh,” Flames danced on Iago’s shoulders. “You don’t have to. But you will.” He stepped closer, kicking an artifact out of his way none too gracefully. It struck the rails of the ship with a sturdy thunk. “You will, or I’ll burn you and the girl next-” [break][break]
A screech shot through the air. A burst of sound struck his front, sending the mage flying back. His spine struck the edge of the ship’s guardrail at a horrid angle, pain springing up. He’d have to thank his past self for never skipping a training day, otherwise his back surely would have been in worse shape. Hell, had he not prepared himself for fight after fight while enamored with his former guild, he likely would have been unable to stand up from that blow. The air was still knocked out from his lungs, and he did still wheeze - but his suspicions were confirmed at the worst of times, eyes locking on the girl - Petra - who now held a single horn between her hands. He had been so focused on the others that he hadn’t spared the feline fatal a single glance. [break][break]
Stupid mistake. [break][break]
“Stolen artifacts,” Iago hissed, rising back to his feet. “I’d say that shit concerns me, Fierro.” [break][break]
“Just let us leave.” The boss began, raising his hand to prevent the girl from unleashing another blast of sound that surely would have landed the mage in the ocean behind him. “And we won’t come after you.” [break][break]
“But you’ll go after other mages?” [break][break]
“If they fuck with us, yes.” [break][break]
“Then I can’t let you leave.” It was a stern and immediate answer, the mage daring to remove his coat and expose the now remaining trio to the scars that adorned his forearms in rapid tints of indigo and violet. He had done them all to himself, albeit inadvertently. They are a symbol of his destructive power. Now, however, they served only as the last things that the group would ever lay eyes on. [break][break]
Normally, he liked to keep them hidden. [break][break]
Yet, when he knew that no one would be around to report his distinct appearance to the authorities once his job was done, there was almost excitement to the thought of ditching his coat and letting his scars breathe for once. [break][break]
“Coat’s off, gentlemen.” He cracked his neck. “Let’s get this party started, shall we?” [break][break]
Ah, that smile. [break][break]
He may not have been a demon in the slightest biologically, but he was damn near one in terms of arrogance. [break][break]
As a force of one, Iago charged towards the would-be lioness and her employer. Best to get through the annoyances first, if only to use them as springboards. [break][break]

The upper deck hadn’t changed. The moon hadn’t moved and the stars hadn’t shifted, and Fierro was exactly where Iago had left him: Standing with his arms folded, his gaze locked on that of his unspoken challenger’s. Beside the boss, the lady shifted her weight back and forth. Was she getting antsy for combat too? Had an argument broken out in the time that he had been gone, both sides only awaiting the arrival of their fellow combatants before jumping head-first into a hellion bloodbath? No, if the other side was smart, they would have attacked Fierro while he was alone. They had wanted to kill him after all, right? [break][break]
So why didn’t they do it while I was away…? [break][break]
He didn’t care to question it any further, the tired mage setting down his crate between the two leaders. Once everything was unloaded, he moved back to Fierro’s side with a sigh, and put his hands in his pockets. He could make out the cold embrace of his piercings jostling back and forth against his cloth. They were pulling ever so slightly against his jacket, eager to reunite with whatever was in the box several paces ahead of them. [break][break]
“Alright,” Fierro spoke, cutting Iago’s daydreams to a screeching halt. “I want the money.” He nodded to Iago. “Go and get it, Indigo.” [break][break]
He was speaking to the deadman’s mage as though he was a dog. The tone taken aggravated Iago to no end, but his suspicions were only moments away from being confirmed, if that. He had to know exactly what was going on. He needed to know precisely what was within the crates, and what these fools wanted with it. He didn’t trust it. The toad was fidgeting for a reason and, even though he had carried the package with lackluster grace, he had been nervous coming into the meeting. [break][break]
He knew that something was up. He and Iago, while not on the same page (or, for that matter, likely the same species) knew that they were essentially reading from the same novel. They were differing in their views, but one had more experience than the other where backhanded and shady deals were concerned. If he was nervous, then the other may as well have been too. Gods knew that their mutual strength could only get them so far an outnumbered or outmatched brawl. [break][break]
Nonetheless, Iago would make a fitting march to the invisible line that separated the pair. As a stroke of absolute luck, the woman - Petra, the toad had called her - began walking forward at the same time. Neither of their gazes wandered from one another, if only out of some unspoken respect. He didn’t recognize her. She must have recognized him. The two may not have been directly on par with one another, but both were ultimately attempting to keep from playing into the other’s hands. [break][break]
Gods, if she had only known what he had planted in the toad’s mind, she would have never dared to reach her hand out. The jewels exposed in her palm were as delectable to hi mas a five course meal, rich avarice coating the glimmering exterior of his soul. He wanted to take it all for himself and, by chance, he may have gotten a chance to do exactly that. If things went down a certain path, he would have had to do nothing more than politely reach out and try to take the jewels from her, purposefully making himself a little closer than needed over the crates. [break][break]
He could feel the toad’s glare. It was a delightful experience, knowing that he had tricked someone into feeling so defenseless - so powerless - that they could do little more than stare with mouth agape instead of properly act on whatever it was that terrified them down to their core. Granted, his personality may not have been entirely to blame there; His appearance was a mess in and of itself, scars and pitch clothing elaborating on the aesthetic of a cast-out monster that he had worked so hard to build. People wanted him to be someone from the moment he was born, his strength and study habits admirable among the company of complete idiots… but by Gods, they had failed. [break][break]
He was not someone. He was a nobody. A phantom who now pulled the strings of his situation with masterful tact, only relying on the other’s inherent and seemingly juvenile protectiveness over a woman who Iago himself had known for only about ten or so minutes after her initial sighting. He wondered what their relationship must have been like. Were they brother and sister, or were they lovers? Gah, that mental image stained the front of his mind, but it didn’t diminish the appearance of a sudden and wicked smirk as he felt the paper first. That was the process of a handshake, after all: The contents of the palm, then the palm itself, then the jarring scream of a man not too far away. [break][break]
“Bastard, don’t touch her!” [break][break]
He heard the sudden stampede of feet against the deck. His visage melted away in an instant, his plan working exactly as he anticipated. Flames raced around his shoulders and digits, cards manifesting in a split second. Glee played on his lips in the form of an enigmatic scowl that was quickly covered by his own magic, a laugh breaking his monotony. [break][break]
Perfect–– [break][break]
“Chariot Gambit!” [break][break]

One may have rightfully asked themselves why he bothered to get the fidgeting scoundrel away from the others. Well, in blunt honesty, it was because things worked when he dared to perform such a task. The sooner he had someone alone, the sooner he could intimidate them. The sooner they felt the fear of god, the sooner they would be willing to cooperate - lest they wanted to lose their head, which he could have provided for them in a swift and painless fashion. Albeit, judging by the appearance of the toad as he waddled along with trembling hands, death was arguably the first thing on his mind. [break][break]
Not so much on how to receive it, however, as how to avoid it. [break][break]
Almost makes me feel bad. Almost. [break][break]
The toad kept a steady distance from Iago as they made their way to the back of the corridor, the door sliding open without resistance. The other looked at the broken knob - or, more fittingly, its remains - then cast a wary look back to the mage standing only a few feet behind him. [break][break]
“It got jammed.” Iago shrugged. “I didn’t want to waste my time jiggling it for an hour.” [break][break]
“... So you can break a knob,” The toad muttered, likely thinking that the monster couldn’t hear him. “But you can’t lift a few crates?” [break][break]
“What was that?” Iago snaked behind him, hands coiling over the toad’s shoulders as they moved into the captain’s room. His grip was tight. Uncomfortable. “Did you say something?” [break][break]
“N-No!” The toad stumbled, turning around and quickly putting up his hands. “I-I didn’t say anything! Not at all, not a single thing!” [break][break]
“Really?” Iago tilted his head to the side slowly. “I could have sworn heard you say something… and, you know,” He moved his hands off from the other’s shoulders, delivering a single patronizing tap to the top of their head before moving to grab a nearby crate. It weighed almost nothing to him, despite the fact that there were clearly objects shifting around inside of it. Someone hadn’t done a very good job of packing the crates with excess materials to keep the valuables from breaking, he noted. Had they been in a rush? [break][break]
“My boss says,” Iago continued, faking a wince as he stepped back towards the door. “That I have permission to kill whichever one of you I dislike the most.” He paused, then looked over his shoulder. Faking a look of consideration was almost too fun. “The girl up there is kind of hot, so I wouldn’t kill her, and your boss looks pretty intimidating-” [break][break]
“Don’t touch Petra!” The toad immediately snapped, his voice raising a little higher than the mage would have preferred. Lo and behold, the freak of nature bounced up and down, angrily displaying every bit of rage he had in his heart without care for the crate he was currently about to break apart with the force of its repeated slams against the ground. For how long his arms were, he didn’t appear to be able to hold anything above his head for too long without getting exhausted. “Don’t, don’t, don’t! I’ll kill you!” [break][break]
“Oh? You’ll kill me?” He gasped, mock offense rich in his voice. “I’m so frightened. What’s your type of magic? Making your opponents pity you so much that they let you win?” He snickered. “Maybe I won’t touch her, then. Maybe I’ll just take her out on a nice date. Is that better?” [break][break]
“That’s even worse!” A croak slipped into his voice as the frog moved forward, clumsily waddling with the crate bouncing with every step. At least that gave away a key piece of information about the materials that were being handed over from one side to another: They weren’t especially volatile. If they had been, the entire area would have likely been blown up by the repeated chaos brought down upon whatever the box held inside of it. [break][break]
“So which would you prefer, then?” Iago jerked his head to the side, ungracefully moving a strand of tattered black in the process. “Do you want her to die, or do you want me to take her out on a date? Because one of those things is going to happen tonight.” He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “It’s just a matter of fact. That’s my magic, you know?” He drummed his fingers against the side of his crate. “If I touch anything that’s living, it just dies instantly. Withers away into nothingness.” He paused. “And, you know, I hate using that on ladies, but…” [break][break]
Something shifted as his voice trailed off. [break][break]
Maybe the other had thought he was joking. That could have been why he immediately reacted with such vigor; In his mind, this was just a clever ploy made by a dead man who sought nothing more than the protection of his benefactor at the end of the day, and playing along with it via childish fits may have earned him a powerful ally. He could have imagined that Iago was just someone in a costume who knew a thing or two about altering their appearances, ensuring that he could intimidate without actually having to back his words up. [break][break]
Yet, something about the tone in which Iago had spoken triggered a deft quietness over the toad. [break][break]
His hands fidgeted again. Iago could make out the sound of anxious and amphibian digits sliding across the wood as his would-be opponent hobbled up the stairs, silent, quivering. He only heard one word from the other as he followed him up, the dull pulsating within the crate growing stronger with every step. [break][break]
“Please don’t hurt her.” [break][break]

[attr="class","onlytimeleft"]
Their eyes appropriately widened at the sight of their would-be opponent. Standing with his back against the railing, Iago must have been quite an intimidating figure; His hood had been let down, allowing waves of black to be pushed back and pulled forward by the ever-present seabreeze. His staples caught the moonlight in such a way to create slight indents through the air, bits and pieces of his own existence scattering themselves as false starlight. It was an interesting endeavor to see up close, the light reflecting from each piercing in a distinct way that separated itself from the last. In an almost considerate move (read as: in a purely tactical move), Iago would abide by their reasonable dismay and begin plucking the pieces of metal out from his skin. [break][break]
One by one, they were placed in the pockets of his coat. By the time he was done, the slightest movement caused a fury of metallic clicks to sound out. [break][break]
Eh. I didn’t plan on using stealth anyways. [break][break]
His attention moved back to the group. They were a small collective of three, the apparent leader of which was a broad-shouldered man on par with many a Fairy Tail member in terms of athleticism. He, like Iago, appeared to take reliably good care of his body. Golden hair was tied up into a tight bun behind his head, though Iago had to question why such a decision had been made: There was hardly enough hair to pull back, making the bun as short and stout as the man standing to the leader’s left. Nonetheless, another feature caught Iago’s attention: A faded guild mark on the man’s neck, albeit the surrounding area was too dark to give him a proper look at it. It wasn’t Fairy Tail. [break][break]
At least, he prayed it wasn’t. [break][break]
He must have been a toad in a former life. His arms were awkwardly long in comparison to his torso, and his legs were only enough to raise him a single foot off of the ground. Had it not been for the absurd length of his spine, Iago may have confused him for a bloodhound standing on his hind legs - which, in all actuality, would have been an accurate comparison. His face was droopy, slight boils appearing around the edges of his head and whatever he called the small mass of flesh where his neck should have been. Unlike the leader, who was dressed in relatively professional armor and gear, this man wore only baggy tan pants and a gray vest that did absolutely nothing to properly cover him up. At the very least, Iago would have to ask him where to get a good drink. Judging by his beer-belly, the toad clearly knew where a good tavern was. The freak clearly could have used one, given how terribly shaky his fingers were against the deck. [break][break]
Then there was the third and final member to their little disaster brigade. A bombshell dressed in pitch black, her hair trailing behind her in massive waves of black and green. Her eyes were neon blue and feline, her nails sharper than most daggers. He reckoned that, if he got too close, she may have tried to hiss at him. Every move someone made was watched by her and her alone, her lips curled back into an eternal and pessimistic scowl. [break][break]
They were a rather odd bunch. Yet, compared to the young lord draped in black and his equally abhorrent partner in crime, they may have passed for normal by virtue of comparison. [break][break]
“So.” The leader of the group clapped his hands together. “Where’s our shit, Fierro?” [break][break]
It was probably supposed to sound intimidating. But, with how the other’s eyes were locked on Iago, it was more so a plea than a command. They knew who they were working against, didn’t they? There was no mistaking the scars, the constant wafts of heat from him, the everything that spelled out his name in big bold letters right alongside the address for the nearest funeral home once their decimation had properly occurred. [break][break]
“Indigo,” Fierro’s usage of his alias caught him off-guard, but Iago looked to him regardless. “Go and fetch the merchandise.” [break][break]
Once more, it was likely supposed to sound intimidating coming from him. Fierro had lowered his voice by several octaves to match the other’s authoritative tone, after all. However, all Iago did in response was shrug, put his hands in his pockets, and look to the fidgeting frog on the opposite side of the deck. [break][break]
“I might need a hand. I’m not exactly the strongest person around.” Ah, how he adored the fact that his appearance betrayed his power. “Think you could give me a hand?” [break][break]
The frog hiccuped, looked to his boss, then begrudgingly nodded. Watching him walk was a comedy show: Every few steps, his waddle would almost result in him toppling over, but his elongated arms refused him the luxury of hitting the ground. Pushing him down the stairs was certainly a thought that occurred to the mage as the two proceeded towards the door leading back into the depths, though he refused to follow through on it. [break][break]
Maybe later.[break][break]

To denounce Iago’s skill as a liar would have been to denounce how bright the sun was. Dead eyes gave away nothing as the two moved back down the corridor and towards the steps, Fierro behind him as if he needed to keep an eye in the monstrous deity of a mage. It was almost enough to piss Iago off then and there. He didn’t need someone to watch him while he walked, let alone someone who likely believed he had the mage wrapped around his finger akin to a piece of violet silk. [break][break]
Still. He’d bite his tongue. There was no guarantee that Fierro was going to exchange the materials to an ulterior party, after all. No, he could have been handing them off to the Rune Knights… but that wouldn’t have made the slightest bit of sense, all things considered. The entire situation was giving him a headache. Who was in the right, who was in the wrong, who was going out of their way to make shit difficult for others —[break][break]
Gah, he was wasting energy by giving a shit. He had gotten paid. As long as the gear didn’t end up in the hands of those who would use it against him specifically, then it was fine. He forced himself to swallow the lump in his throat as they re-emerged above deck, Fierro’s twitching digits signaling that the other had something he wanted to say.[break][break]
“Listen,”[break][break]
Right on cue.[break][break]
“I don’t know what you saw in there, or if you touched anything,” Fierro began, clearing his throat. “But whatever it was, I loaded it on—“[break][break]
“Don’t worry about it.” Iago interrupted him, his words unintentionally sharper than he meant for them to be. His expression never wavered from passive indifference as he leaned back against the ship’s railing, arms crossed over his chest, eyes - as always - a thousand miles away. “Like you said, won’t affect me.” [break][break]
Fierro didn’t say anything for a time. He opened his mouth once or twice, taking in a breath or two as though to prepare himself to let loose an objection or explanation for what was beneath their deck… but seemed to set whatever he was about to state aside after catching a glimpse of rotten indifference at perceived play in the eyes of his hired mutt. That was one of the many joys of having dulled eyes, for everything looked boring to him. There was not a single thing that excited him, should one have gone off of Iago’s limited expressions alone. [break][break]
Smiling had always been hard without his staples placed within his skin, let alone with them actively bouncing back and forth - shifting ever so slightly - with every other breath. [break][break]
One hand fiddled with the aforementioned pieces of iron attached to the back of his other palm, watching as the metal moved back and forth between slits of skin. Too much time had passed since his incident, he noted, for it didn’t hurt as much as it used to. Maybe it was the fact that his standing and stability had been burned alongside the rest of his mortal coil… or maybe it was just dumb luck that happened to open itself up to him.[break][break]
Regardless, he didn’t particularly care. [break][break]
As long as it didn’t come back to bite him, he was fine… [break][break]
… Which was why, as time continued to pass, he couldn’t look over the existence of possible artifacts beneath his feet. He knew they were dangerous, he knew they could have been used against him in an instant; They were the forgotten treasures of gods and kings alike, what business did Fierro have laying claim to all of them? None of it made sense to him. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that he couldn’t simply put it beside him - but, by then, the conversation had already moved away into oblivion. [break][break]
By chance, he may have gotten lucky. Maybe the artifacts would be traded off to savory individuals and not those who wanted his head on a silver platter. It wouldn’t have anything to do with him or other mages. Maybe it was an archeological exchange that they didn’t want the Knights to discover. [break][break]
As the moon sat on her throne high above his head, he knew he was wrong. [break][break]
Fierro must have picked up on it. The sound of boots rapidly approached the pair and, as Iago’s eyes drifted down to peer at the oncoming group, his employer’s hand rested on his shoulder. [break][break]
“Just play nice.” Fierro murmured. “And I’ll triple your payment.” [break][break]
Under any other circumstance, that would have been enough to make the mage hold his tongue and pull his own leash back around a metal pole. Unfortunately, his suspicions were brewing more with every passing second, anxiety toying with his heart in his chest. He couldn’t ignore the possibility for death and destruction that the artifacts may have caused, and he especially couldn’t leave it be given the fact that - in the event that the others really did want Fierro’s head in order to achieve their goods without paying for them - he was liable to be next on the chopping block. [break][break]
Play it cool. He told himself, giving only a court and impolite nod to Fierro. Wait until it changes hands. Then I’ll strike… if I need to. [break][break]
He hoped he didn’t need to. [break][break]
God, he really hoped so. [break][break]

It took an hour or so for Fierro to fall asleep and, once the young lord was fully unconscious, Iago began searching. The ship itself was an impressive build, several cabins beneath the deck highlighting the fact that this was not usually used for ulterior purposes. [break][break]
Of course, it was the trek into the darkness beneath the depths that made Iago’s skin crawl. Being under anything was never a favorable position for him, mobility acting as his greatest weapon on a fight: Vanishing from point to point was his means of catching others off guard, playful tricks covering the tracks of an ice-cold killer.[break][break]
His ice melted once the ship began rocking back and forth at a greater frequency. At the bottom of the stairwell leading into the ship’s core, several cabins had been left with their doors wide open. The faint humming of lacrima crystals left behind was a bitter annoyance — but, even so, he’d still snatch a communication lacrima or two along the way, browsing each cabin with the same attitude that a shopper would have had amid their favorite market stroll. Beyond the crystals, only sheets remained on empty beds, a few empty frames leaving the impression that others had lived in the ship for quite a while before returning.[break][break]
Wonder where they went, Iago mused to himself. And why they would leave some of this stuff behind.[break][break]
That was another aspect of the situation that didn’t add up. The ship was docked, the grew was gone, the captain was nowhere to be found, but they’d leave precious remains behind? Communication lacrima, empty frames - He could understand abandoning one of those, but both? Wouldn’t someone who spent months adrift cherish even the frames that carried reminders of home?[break][break]
Ah, but he could attest to the fact that not everyone shared such a sentimental mindset. He didn’t keep what he had cherished in Fairy Tail, after all. Those frames, those trinkets, all the memories associated with them ought to have rotted at the bottom of a shallow grave for all he cared. There was no point in being sentimental towards weakling days… but perhaps he was a rarity in that disposition.[break][break]
He continued moving through the lower quarters, mindful to watch his step and remain steady with his right hand braced against the corridor wall. The only door that was actually shut at the end was what he presumed to be the captain’s room. Safe to say he was neither graceful nor poised as he jiggled the knob once, then twice.[break][break]
Locked? He squinted. Huh.[break][break]
There was the signature sound of wood being crushed beneath his grip, the door sliding open a moment later. That was the eternal perk of his physical attributes: Fairy Tail hadn’t trained him for nothing, his physical strength more than enough to handle a damn door knob. If he couldn’t crush a simple wooden knob, then he’d have to rejoin the guild… if only to apologize for failing them in such a simple manner.[break][break]
He took notice of the knob’s now crushed composition. Wood. Why wood? That didn’t make sense to him either. Knobs were typically metal, so why—[break][break]
He couldn’t continue.[break][break]
Pain shot through the side of his jaw as one of his staples ripped itself out, clinging to the side of a crate a meter or so ahead of him. The sensation brought him back to the present, and gods, what a fitting sight for one such as him. [break][break]
In front of him, crates upon crates of unknown origin were stacked up to the ceiling. It was against one of these crates that his staples began attaching themselves, sticking to it with weak albeit notable force. His hand raised to slowly run over his marred skin as he moved forward, lowering his left hand from his cheek to let it rest against the side of the metal-attracting crate.[break][break]
It pulsated. Like a beating heart, something inside of it was moving.[break][break]
His heart sunk to the pit of his stomach. One by one, he’d retrieve his piercings from the side of the box, painstakingly reapplying each one with deft proficiency. This time, he’d make sure to put them in a bit deeper than usual. The feeling was unpleasant, but necessary: He couldn’t bare the thought of leaving a trace of himself behind in the form of a staple, lest the Rune Knights get on his trail.[break][break]
They weren’t really a concern of his in the moment but, should his suspicions have been proven correct, they very well may have become one of his worst foes yet. He had never been in the business of explaining himself, after all. It was much funner to witness his opponents attacks, to take in their determination as a sponge would have with oil. He’d give it back to them ten-fold with his unique brand of devastation. No survivors. No witnesses.[break][break]
No way this is just some harmless piece of gear.[break][break]
An unfamiliar sensation built in the pit of his stomach. Dread? No, never. More akin to the feeling of being watched —[break][break]
He whirled on his heel, one hand latched around his box of cards, the other primed to create a burst of fire that could total a building in and of itself. Steam was exhaled through a grid of clenched teeth, a forced smile covering his tracks. [break][break]
“Oi, Fierro.”[break][break]

He had no intention of staying in Magnolia for long. It was the den of those who loathed him, who questioned what he did, who looked at him as though he was some sort of fool for leaving. He couldn’t have blamed them, regardless as to if he wanted to or not; At the end of the day, they were right in their assumption of him. He was a brash and indifferent individual, a paradox of apathy and overwhelming empathy. Someone who wanted everything, but would give away anything if it started to bore him in the slightest. A sharp tongue and sharper wit awaited those who dared to intrude on his pleasantries during his hot-second stay... [break][break]
God, pleasantries was a vast overstatement. [break][break]
A few scattered members of a particular guild looked at him with ire clear in their eyes, muted indifference permeating from his own. That was one of the few blessings of having naturally empty hues: There was nothing for others to judge or gain by staring through a voided window. Regardless, he and the group had exchanged no words, nor had they made any sign to initiate some sort of combat; They were merely watching him from the corners of their eyes, and Iago - never being the sort to hide his indifference or loathing towards someone - would meet each one of them with the same cold demeanor to his name. [break][break]
The silent exchange itself lasted only for a split second. [break][break]
Good. He didn’t want to waste his time. [break][break]
He adjusted his grasp on his bag, then continued his stroll through the town. His exact purpose in the location was one that Iago was still trying to determine; He could have ran by Fairy Tail to see how they were doing, but spite prevented him from doing so. He could have dropped in on a shop or two to see if anything had changed in their stock, but that would have only prolonged the inevitable fall of the Dead Eye Mage back into boredom. [break][break]
He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth, eyes locking on an interesting figure. A cloud was used as a steed - Ah, now that was a special sort of magic. Or perhaps it was common, and he simply hadn’t been used to seeing it out in the open. Nonetheless, he’d approach the other with little more than a dismissive and absent-minded wave. [break][break]
“Your legs broke or somethin’?”[break][break]
Of course, it was a blunt question. Calling out other’s apparent laziness was always easier than having his own brough to his attention. [break][break]
Not to mention the fact that it was funner, too. [break][break]
