"Too much talk, Not enough boom." "Are you associated with a guild?" The secretary asked. " I'm independent." "And could I have your name please?" " Caliber Ecks." "Alright, Mister Ecks, I've confirmed your acceptance of the bounty. I really hope that you'll be able to deal with him. He's caused enough trouble for the village." Caliber simply nodded to her as thanks. " That's the plan." He departed the small guild office of Old Crook with the bounty poster in hand, giving a description of 'King Hog' and his reported crimes. The man looked as close to a pig as a human physically could, with about three extra chins, a neck hidden by folds, and a smashed in nose. The man looked so cartoonish that he wasn't sure if the drawer was taking some extra liberties in his appearance. But from what how some of the townspeople described him, this was apparently accurate. Old Crook was famous for it's breakfasts, most notably the cuts of bacon it made from its home bred hogs. It was the primary reason he'd cut through the town, that and a need for a bit of a rest of restock. Imagine the shock of being told that their supply was now limited due to recent raids on the village by a rogue bandit mage? It was a tragedy he couldn't let stand. It was easy enough registering for the bounty; anyone who thought they could handle it were free to take it on. It was another thing entirely fulfilling it. Now, the easy route would to just wait for the man to do another raid, and attack him there. But his magic wasn't exactly what you'd call environment friendly, and he could not afford to have another village spreading rumors about the 'Wild Bomber'. So, he was left with the task of actually tracking down King Hog to whatever pigsty he'd holed himself up in, and either burying him in it, or bringing him in hog tied. Alright, that was enough with the inner monologue puns. He was giving himself a headache. "Excuse me, sir!" A voice called out from behind, just as Caliber began to mull over where to start his search. He had to be somewhere nearby. Close enough that he was able to rapidly get into the village, and get out of it without much worry or effort. Maybe a cave or something. Two men approached him, one armed with a basic longsword at their side and wearing some worn leather armor, while the other carried a crossbow on their backs and wore a cloak. "We noticed you coming from the guild officer. Are you by chance pursuing the bandit bounty." " That's the plan, at least." He gave them a glance over. They didn't seem to be kitted out like adventurers, or even travelers. Locals? " Why're you curious?" "Ah, forgive me. My name is Roland, a sergeant in Old Crook's guard, and this is my friend Eric. We'd like to join you in fighting the bandit." " A little late for the guard to be doing something, isn't it? Usually when a bounty is posted, it means it's beyond your average man's ability to complete. And judging by your gear... it's accurate." Eric would tense his hand into a fist, and start towards Caliber, only to be held back by Roland. "Unfortunately, that is... true. The menace has strong magic at his beck and call, which left us utterly helpless in dealing with him. But you are a mage too, right? Or some kind of decent adventurer?" Caliber shrugged in agreement. "Then it shouldn't be hard for you to deal with him. But before that, you'd need to find him, right? And since you aren't a local, you don't even know where to start, I suspect." His silence was all the confirmation Roland needed. "Exactly. Luckily though, me and Eric know the surrounding area like the back of our hands, and he is one of our best hunters. So with your strength and our knowledge, we should make a capable team. What do you say?" He held out his hand. Caliber stared at it for a few moments, before sighing and shaking it. " Lead the way then." He said, offering a smirk. C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 716 Words - 100 MP MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." "We never got your name, by the way." Roland said, breaking a silence that had lasted several minutes. The trio had long since left the village, and were now traveling through route south of it, which they'd informed him that had been the direction that King Hog usually left in after his raids. It was around midday, the canopy of the forest blocking and filtering much of the sun's light. Eric was leading the way, being a tracker, he had the best chance of picking up any clues to the bandit's location, while he and Roland brought up the rear. " Caliber." He responded. "Caliber... that sounds familiar? Where have I heard it before?" Roland said, his face narrowing in an attempt to remember. " It's a, ah, pretty common name, I think. Met at least three other Calibers." He did not need the man figuring out his nickname nor reputation. Or he could kiss a celebratory brunch goodbye whenever they got this bounty done. Really, he'd gained it out of pure misunderstandings; his magic was a volatile one, and more than once he'd made an early mistake of releasing his magical power in the midst of others. The first time, he'd sneezed while in a tavern, and blown an entire section of the wall away. That pinched his pockets. And the second time, he'd gotten a bit hot headed during a card game, and slammed the table in frustration, blowing it, the other players, and most of surrounding environment clean away. No had died in either case, luckily, but it had eaten up most of the jewels he'd gotten from the sale of his family's shop, and awarded him his nickname, 'Wild Bomber'. "No, no, that's not it. It was something in the news. On the tip of my tongue..." "Hey, you two, c'mere." Eric's voice had broken through, thankfully disrupting Roland's train of thought. The two followed him over towards a clearing, where an old fire pit sat long undisturbed, with dirt and leaves having settled into it. Around it, was an overturned log and several posts driven into the ground. "Look at this." He rifled through the ashes of the fire, and pulled out several charred sticks. Sticks don't usually curve like that. What are they? "Ribs." He said, as if reading Caliber's mind. "Pig ribs, to be specific. Plenty of them in here, and I'll bet we could find a whole bone pile nearby. Seems as though King Hog had himself a feast." He flicked the bones back down, and wiped his hands. "The camp isn't recent, but the weather has been dry, so the tracks aren't bad. His last attack was about two weeks ago, and he got three hogs. They're likely to leave some deep imprints in the ground." Roland bumped Caliber's shoulder, grinning. "See, I told you, one of our best." " He's alright." The group continued on, at Eric's lead, following King Hog's tracks. "So, are you with a guild, Caliber? Like Fairy Tail?" " Nope." His answer was short and to the point. He'd never joined a guild simply because he never had a reason to. "I, uh.. see" A few more minutes of awkward silence passed, before Roland spoke again. "So what kind of magic can you use? Is it something spectacular? I've seen one or two of the mages that have come through town perform theirs, and it was a real show." " Hmm. My magic isn't exactly the show and tell kind. Useful in a fight, but not much else. Hopefully well catch up to Hog, and you'll get to see it, and survive." Caliber let the last part hang for a bit before smiling. " Joking. Mostly." "Too much talk, Not enough boom." " The bounty poster didn't mention the type of magic that Hog uses. There a reason for that?" Dead leaves, twigs, and dried dirt crunch under foot as the trio made their way through the forest. It had been an hour or two since they'd picked up a strong lead on their target's trail, and it only seemed to be getting stronger. Clearly King Hog wasn't expecting anyone to actively seek him out. That, or he was just incredibly sloppy in covering his tracks. Which, considering his name, wasn't too far fetched. "That's because... no that has seen it personally, has lived." Roland paused for a few seconds in silence, while Eric glanced back. "The first few raids, the guard made attempts to stop him. And they just... disappeared. Gone. No bodies, no parts, just gone." He shook his head. "After that, the captain shifted our orders from capture to just trying to save as many lives as we could, and let him take what he wanted." " Damn. Must be something pretty powerful to leave nothing behind. I didn't see a lot of damage to the town though when I was walking through." "He didn't do much to the town at all. All he does it attack the holding pins on the edge of the town, sometimes go after supply wagons that may be near. Takes them all, which is something in itself, seeing as he takes the entire goddamn carts and hogs and leaves just as quick." He'd never heard of anyone with a magic like that before, but that really wasn't unusual. His father used to say there were as many forms of magic in the world as there were blades of grass, each one special and unique to its wielder. Where one person could fly with fire magic, another might be able to teleport through flames, or make a golem with them. Something that could make entire people or objects disappear didn't exactly help narrow down the list of possibilities. It looked like he'd be blind on this one, which he really, really didn't like to do. "Have any insights you want to share with us?" Eric said, a bit on the aggressive side, Caliber noted. " Not really. Magic is a tool of limitless potential. Something you want to get off your chest?" "... Roland, why are we even helping this guy? This entire problem started with a mage. They're nothing but trouble magnets." "Eric...." " Hey, it was your village that posted the open bounty. If they didn't want mage help, they could've specified. And not all of us bring destruction and chaos in our wake." "Oh, sure, then I suppose they you got your nickname from helping to build a schoolhouse, huh?" " What-" "Didn't think I recognized your name, huh, Caliber 'Wild Bomber' Ecks. Unlike Roland, I actually pay attention to the news." " Listen that nickname is a mis-" A howl cut into the already heated argument, silencing any further bickering between Caliber and Eric. The trees and bushes around them rustled, before a pack of five wolves emerged from them, snarling and beginning to encircle the group. Roland slowly unsheathed his sword, while Eric took out his crossbow and knocked an arrow. "Perhaps you two can finish this chat later?" "Too much talk, Not enough boom." The three backed into each other, facing outwards, as the wolf pack encircled them, seemingly gauging either their level of threat, or potential as the night's meal. Most people, when they think of wolves, would put them on a scale similar to your common dog. Not to say that their size wasn't threatening, but most had no idea how off they were. The wolves here, now, were the size of Roland, who himself stood at least a few inches taller than Caliber. And the largest among them, the alpha, almost dwarfed them. He'd be lying if he didn't say he was surprised there wasn't a quest to eliminate this pack, by some local farmer. "No one make any sudden movements..." Eric warned. " Really? I thought maybe I'd pet one. Maybe that one, he looks cuddly." "You know what-" "Can we please save the bickering until after we've survived this." " They're just wolves, Roland. No need to panic. Plus, you two have weapons. If I was the nervous type, I should be the one worried." "What kind of adventurer walks around without a weapon in hand? An idiot." ' That... or someone that's confident in what they can do." Caliber's hands tensed into fists, as he went over the odds in his head. A lot of people didn't realize the physical aspect that went into learning and using magic. You had to train your body as hard as you trained you mind. If you didn't use a type of Requip, and you didn't look physically imposing, ninety percent of the time a mage's strength was underestimated. When in reality, even some of the weakest among them were a tier above that of your average person. And Caliber was nowhere near considered among the weakest. " What's the hesitation for? Let's get to it." He moved from his spot at a speed that seemed to even catch the wolves off guard, which served well as he kicked one in it's underbelly, sending it sprawling away with a pained yelp. This signaled to all others involved that the fighting had begun. A wolf leapt at Roland, only for the veteran guard to side step it and take a swing, managing to get a shallow slash in as it passed. Eric fired his crossbow at one, catching it in the leg mid-air and causing it to crash down with a whimper. Caliber stood off with another, each waiting for the other to take the first step. The wolf did so, and he sidestepped it in response, managing to grab it's tail and swing it around, before releasing it towards Roland, who was holding off his own with his sword. The two wolves collided and were thrown off, allowing him to regain his balance. The alpha, who'd been lurking around, waiting for it's chance to strike, seemingly found it was Eric reloaded his crossbow. In a moment of hesitation, he froze, unsure of how to react. " Hand Grenade!" Caliber's fist collided with the alpha, setting off a near deafening explosion that send dust and debris scattering into the air, along with the body of the wolf. It soared for several meters, before colliding with the tree, lifeless. The other wolves, having been injured and losing their leader, whimpered and limped away, back into the forest. "What do you know-" he said, smiling at Eric, " -you survived." C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 560 Words MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." " Y'know, he actually is cuddly, after you get past the charred hair, and burnt flesh, and... bone? A little bone too." Caliber knelt over the alpha's body, having pulled up his scarf to block out the smell while he prodded it with a stick. Yeah, it was dead, if the burnt up spot where it's stomach would be wasn't enough of an indicator. He flicked the stick to the side and stood up, walking over towards Roland and Eric, who were taking a bit of a short break. " You two alright?" "Fine, thanks to you, I'm not ashamed to say. You're stronger than you look." Roland said. " You'd be how surprised how often I hear that." "In my younger days I probably could've taken on at least three of those things by myself." He leaned back on the tree he sat against. He glanced at his sword, which rested in a similar fashion at his side. "That magic you have certainly is effective, I have to say. Caliber looked at his fist, and shrugged. "You know, when I was younger, I wanted to learn some magic, and become a Rune Knight." " Why didn't you?" "Eh, I don't know, honestly. Responsibilities, relationships, skill, time... take your pick. All of them are just excuses anyway. Eventually, I got just a bit too old, a bit too lazy. Old Crook doesn't see much trouble beyond the occasional tavern brawl." " It's never too late to learn a new trick or two." "Ha, I appreciate you saying that. But I'm good where I am. I honestly don't even known why I came with you and Eric. He's all you really need." Roland glanced over to his friend, offering a smile to the young man's annoyance. "Maybe you could become a Knight, eh, Eric? You have the skill for it!" "I don't need to be a Rune Knight, Roland. Becoming a guard is good enough for me." "He's just afraid of leaving home." "Am not!" Caliber and Roland shared a laugh at Eric's response, further deepening the scowl that had formed on his face. "If you two are done chatting, we should continue moving. I want to find King Hog before it gets too late in the day, or before something messes up the trail." In more or less agreement, Roland got up with a hand from Caliber, and the trio once again went on the move. C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 411 Words MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." "Caliber." Eric suddenly said out of the blue. It'd been a few hours since the brief encounter with the wolves, and it was well into mid-evening. The trail they were following was clear even to Caliber, with evidence such as scraps of clothe and other items found at abandoned camp sites they'd come across. He was willing to fight King Hog at night, but with his strength being an unknown and him having to watch out for the other two, the prospect of it was more right than normal. " Found something?" "No, I- Well-" He stammered a bit in an attempt to find the right words. "I didn't mean to snap on you before. About being a mage and all that." He finally managed. " Oh." "It's just... Hog has been terrorizing us for months, and we've been defenseless against him. And then here you come, with more magic, to try and solve it for us? It just ate away at me. And then when Roland recognized your name and I remembered the article-" " Hey, it's cool. I get it. Not everyone is a fan of mages. I don't blame them, or you. It's how the world is. You read about a guy slaying a dragon, or toppling a castle with his pinky, and it gets kinda overwhelming. Want to know how I really earned the nickname?" Eric shrugged. " Inexperience. I wasn't good at controlling my magical power output. And my magic is a naturally volatile one. Mix those two together, and you get a blown up tavern from a sneeze. Or a destroyed town square from a punch in frustration. The wilder stories are what tend to stick in peoples minds, so that's what grows your reputation." Eric was silent for a few more minutes as they walked, before letting out a small laugh. "Really, a sneeze?" " I have dust allergies.", he shrugged. "Well!" Roland came up on the two, clapping them on the shoulders and bring them in. "Isn't this great? You two are actually getting along. And here I thought you might kill each other before we even reached King Hog." " Yeah, well-" "Wait!" Eric stopped them in their tracks, raising a finger to his lips and pointing upwards. In the air, above the canopy of the forest, a rather thick smoke plume could be seen rising into the air, along the thinnest scent of ham, roasting over a fire. "Too much talk, Not enough boom." The three crept up on the source of the smoke plume; a large bon fire on which two pigs were roasting on a spit. It sat near the opening of a cave, from which dim light could be seen emerging from it. Several boxes, crates, and even a wagon sat around the fire, in a sort of impromptu camp, fit for several people. Though no one was readily visible from their position. " We find him?" "Certainly seems like it. Or at least, his camp. The swine that are roasting are definitely from Old Crook. And I recognize the insignia on some of those crates. They're from the leather-smith's workshop in town. They export the hide after the pigs have been butchered for their meat." Roland's hand drifted to his sword, as if he were a hair's edge from leaping from their spot and attacking right away. "Woah, Roland, calm down. We don't even know if he's in the camp." Eric said, steadying the older man. "What do you mean, he's cooking his dinner as we speak." "Right, but a fire that big, you need a lot of fire wood. And do you see any log piles set up? No. He might've stepped away to get some extra, to keep them going strong." " And if we made a ruckus or moved now, we could tip him off as he's coming back, and he'd make a run for it." "Exactly." "Alright, then what should we do?" Roland asked having settled down for now. Eric pondered for a bit, while Caliber glanced around the camp. There was no sight of any animals to draw the wagon, living or roasted, so how the hell was he moving it? It didn't seem like it was magically powered, at least, outwardly. It could have a lacrima stashed inside of it for that purpose. What were they going to do, anyway? At the start, he'd planned for this to just be a an all out brawl, him against Hog, mage against mage. There'd be some damage to the surrounding forest, sure, but he was pretty sure he could take the guy down if he didn't hold back. But with Roland and Eric here, that threw a wrench into his plans. From the wolf fight, he could tell they weren't up for this. Roland was a bit to slow, and Eric was a bit too weak, even if Hog didn't use spells. And with them likely to be in close proximity at all times, he wouldn't be able to lob his attacks off any which way he wanted. He could tell them to stay back, to just sit and watch, but it was highly likely they wouldn't do that. Damn it. As he went over his options, which ranged from knocking them out to tying them up, a figure caught his eye. " Hey, have either of you seen King Hog in person?" "No." "Can't say I have." " Then I need to talk to the guy who gave his description, because we are going to have words." C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 510 Words MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." " Who was the person who decided he looked like a fat slob, huh? Wait a second, didn't you say that no one has seen him and survived?" Caliber unfurled the bounty poster from his pocket, looking at the soft and roll abundant face, and compared it with the one that stood in the camp, one that was hard in it's features and strength. He looked like he should be called simply 'King', rather than King Hog. "I'm... actually not certain. Rumors traveled around the town, I suppose. All he ever took were our sows and supplies, so that's how he got the name King Hog. And when the bounty poster needed a description, I guess people just went off of what they had heard of him." Roland explained. " Sounds about right. Alright listen, we still don't know what the guy's magic is so- Wait. Where's Eric?" Caliber and Eric looked towards where the young hunter had been a few moments ago, only to find the spot vacant. "You're not as big as I thought you were going to be, but I'll still stick you like those pigs for what you've done to our village!" Eric's voice rang out into the evening as he approached King Hog with his crossbow ready. And arrow was already set and ready in the trigger, waiting for just a little pressure to be released. Hog looked over at him, a soft look of confusion crossing his face. He began to step towards Eric, which cause the younger man to falter back a few steps, before stopping a few meters in front of him. " Oh? I didn't plan on having an appetizer before dinner." A smirk cut into his face. "Wha-" " Devour", Hog opened his mouth, his lower jaw seemingly unhinging and dipping almost to the top of his chest. Inside his mouth, were dozens of a teeth, surrounding a black abyss, which now siphoned in the air, dirt, and debris that lie directly in front of him. Eric's own feet began to slide towards the gaping abyss, and in panic, he fired his crossbow, the arrow flying directly into the maw and disappearing. Soon after, despite his resistance, Eric would follow, sucked into the air, off his feet, and barreling towards the maw. "Eric!" Roland called out, attempting to go out for him, only to be stopped by Caliber. " Wait, or you'll follow him too!" The two watch as Eric disappeared into the darkness, before Hog's jaw rehinged, and he let out a belch. " Ha, not bad. And what's this?" He now turned towards the remaining pair. " Man, when it rains, it's pours. I shouldn't get greedy but... what the hell?" C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 461 Words MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." "ERIC!" Roland screamed out, unsheathing his sword and taking the first of what would have been a full charge, had he not been grabbed by Caliber. "Let go of me! Now!" " Roland you need to calm down!" "I said get off of me!" " Sit-" Caliber grabbed his shoulder, and harshly tossed him backwards, further into the brush of the foest. " -back. Don't a damn idiot, Roland. You just saw Eric get snapped up in one bite, and the guy didn't even move. What are you gonna do with a old rusty sword?" "I-" " I get it. Really, I do. But you'll have to sit this one out." Caliber stepped forward. He rolled his shoulders, and cracked the knuckles on his hands as he stood before King Hog, there eyes meeting in a mutual stare down. " I'm gonna have to cut your meal there short, Hog. People are saying your a bit of a messy eater." " Ha! You're bold. You and that old man are gonna end up just like your friend; nothing more than just evening snack!" " I don't know about that one. I think I'd cause a little more than a tummy ache for you." " Well then, let's just find out! Devour!." Hog cast his magic again, the same abyss opening in place of his mouth and sucking in all that stood in front of him, which included Caliber. The young mage took a step back, attempting to steady himself against the ground, only to be pulled in similar to how Eric was, being dragged forward until eventually he was taken off his feet. In the moments before he entered the abyss, a distortion in the air appeared around his hands, and Caliber, grinning clapped them together. " Thunder Clap!" True to it's name, the resulting explosion detonated like a clap of thunder, blowing Hog into the air, and sending him crashing backwards into his camp. He knocked over the spits that held the cooking pigs, but narrowly missed falling into the fire pits. The front of his clothes was scorched and singed, with embers still glowing on the edges of it. His movements were wobbly, dazed, as he attempted to stand again. " You're... a mage..?" He stammered out. " Didn't think I was gonna fist fight you, now, did you?" " This... changes things... Forget a snack. You're the MAIN COURSE! Gluttony!" Instead of in his mouth, an abyss five times its size opened in his stomach, and began sucking in not just the dirt in front of him, but chunks of the earth itself, as well as the pigs, crates and any other loose items in his immediate vicinity. It was like watching a cyclone cross over the ground, leaving nothing behind in it's wake. Although he could feel the air being drawn towards Hog from his spot, it seemed like he was out of the effective range of the spell. For now, at least. " Ah, see now the name is making sense..." A the vortex declined, Caliber could see that Hog's form had shifted. He'd, well, gained a lot of weight, his form seeming to have swelled in the last few seconds, looking as if he were melting by the way everything sagged over each other. He actually looked like the sketch in his bounty now. " King Slug might've been better, though." Hog faced towards Caliber, drooling beginning to spill from the side of his mouth as he grinned. " I don't know how you think your gonna win now that you look like you can barely move your own legs, man." " Belch." He suddenly inhaled, a visible regurgitation traveling through his body before peaking at his mouth. " What the h-" Caliber's disgust was cut off as a mass made up of rock and junk was spit up by the man, rocketing towards him. " Thunder Steps!" His legs exploded with energy, propelling him into the air, just in time to dodge past the projectile as it crashed into a tree. "Dude, that is the grossest thing I've ever seen." Hog responded by sending several more shots into the air, which he strafed in order to dodge. Thunder Steps was probably his least used spell, so he was no aerial ace, but he managed to avoid the shots for the most part. He hovered in the air for a moment, gathering himself. Probably be a good idea to finish this before the guy ate the whole country side. He was quite literally a soft target, it was just a matter of getting to him without getting sucked in. Eh, no use in over thinking it. Sometimes big problems called for small solutions. He streaked towards Hog, channeling energy into his palm until it became a sizable glowing orb, and directed it towards the gluttonous mage " Missile!" He fired it towards him, or rather, near him, the magical projectile flying forward and exploding in the ground in front of Hog, throwing up a thick cloud of dust and debris. Taking his chance, Caliber looped around int he sky, and came crashing down towards him, imbuing both of his fists with another spell. " Hand Grenades!". The resulting explosion shook the area for tens of meters around them, the earth echoing with its power. When things finally settled, Roland crept out from his spot in the forest, having made the decision to clear away in the face the two mage's brief battle. In the epicenter of a large, barren cracker, was Caliber, sitting next to King Hog, who despite the impact, still seemed like he was breathing. At least partially. The veteran guard approached silently, his sword at his side, ready to strike the mage down. Caliber simply looked at him, and shrugged. " If you think it'll help you, be my guest. The bounty said dead or alive." Roland raised his sword, and hesitated for a few moments, before dropping it, and falling to his knees. A hand would pat him on the shoulder amidst his breakdown. " How about we finish this up, huh?" C-Class - Detonate - Wanderer - 1,008 Words MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRPHY 2.0

"Too much talk, Not enough boom." The aftermath of the fighting was... a quiet thing. Roland helped him look around the camp, site, loading any supplies Hog had stolen onto the wagon, which miraculously was left pretty much unscathed. The same could not be said for the man himself, who was barely in a condition to breathe, let alone be conscious. It seemed like the weight he'd gained at the expense of his magic was a permanent thing, at least until he used it again, as his size now was somewhere between when they first saw him and when he used his Gluttony spell. They loaded him into the wagon without much effort, and Caliber took on the duty of pulling on their way back to town, which was simplied now that they could follow an actual path and not cut through the forest. Neither spoke for the few hours it took to return to Old Crook, by now it being early into the night, with the moon overhead. They settled in near the town center, where a few guards me them to see what they brought. A shout of surprise broke into the night air at the sight of King Hog lying in the back of the wagon. A crowd quickly gathered around the pair, as cheers of celebration began to circle around them. Caliber was congratulated and thanked, the air of happiness bring a small grin to his face. When he looked over to Roland, though, all he saw was the back of the man's head, as he wandered off to the tavern. After confirming that who he had brought in was indeed King Hog, and visiting the local guild office to receive his payment for it's completion, Caliber was whisked away by some members of the crowd, who'd already started on a few drinks, and dragged towards the tavern to celebrate. He was offered so many rounds by so many people that he was liable to die of alcohol poisoning if he accepted them all. There was dancing, and songs, and someone even cooked up some of the village's famous bacon for a late night snack, and hell, it tasted as good as the rumors said it did. Better, even. Amidst the cheerfulness, he noticed a solitary figure out the corner of his eye, a man stewing over two mugs, by himself. Caliber managed to break away from the festivities and make his way over to Roland, who looked as if he'd aged ten years in a single night. " Seat taken?" Roland looked at him, and simply gestured towards the seat, before taking a swig from his mug. The pair sat in silence for a bit, enjoying their drinks, before Caliber spoke, " You know the guild has a reward set aside for you, if you want to claim it. You did help me out on the job." "By doing what? Barely fighting back a wolf? Or maybe it was my contribution to the battle, where I just sat and hid behind a tree trunk?" " Roland-" "No, no. Don't butter me up. Don't sweeten the situation. I was the most useless one there. I couldn't even save...", he paused, cutting himself off. " For what it's worth, I'm sorry. Jobs like this, usually aren't made for your average person. Hell, I'm still a rookie when it comes to all of it, despite what I might say. It's dangerous, and sometimes people get hurt, or even die." He stood up, placing a few jewels on the table, enough to pay for whatever Roland needed to get through the night. " Eric made a mistake, and it was a bad one. But I think he would've made a decent knight." With that, he left the man to his sorrows and grief. He was able to get lodging in the room above the tavern, though he did have to pay for it, the old man running the bar being a stingy thing. He was tired, a bit bruised, and weary from the drain of the day. He collapsed into bed without so much as kicking his boots off, and drifted to sleep. In the morning, after a quick breakfast, just as delicious as it was last night, he shopped around a bit, getting supplies from the various shops in the village, including a supply of pork jerky to take with him. Looking at his map, his options from here were limitless, but he thought it'd be nice to actually see what one of the more famous towns was like. And with that in mind, he set pace for Magnolia.
